A couple identified only as "Mr. Teng and Ms. Zhang" have been charged after allegedly selling their baby for money that was spent on a shopping spree, which included an iPhone.
According to The Telegraph, the Shanghai, China couple placed advertisements for their unborn baby in June.
The couple, who already have two children, wanted 50,000 yuan, which is about $8,000.
After giving birth to the baby at home to hide any public record of the child, the couple allegedly sold their baby girl and deposited a large amount of money in their bank account on the very same day.
The unemployed couple reportedly told prosecutors, "We did not give the baby away for money, but in order to give it more security. Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees."
But prosecutors say that after the sale of the baby, the couple spent large amounts of money on the web, which included buying an iPhone and a pair of high-end sports shoes.
Prosecutors say the couple's “sinister conspiracy†included lying about Zhang’s pregnancy to neighbors who were told that her baby bump was a tumor.
No word on whether the couple bought the high-end iPhone 5s or the lower-end iPhone 5c.
According to AFP, Apple's products are so popular in China that a teenager sold his kidney and used the money to buy an iPhone and iPad in 2012.
While many Chinese residents have condemned the alleged baby sale on social media sites, one person posted, "This is good business -- no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys."
