Two people were hurt as a plaster ceiling collapsed at the Philippines' main international airport, the manager said Wednesday, in the latest blow to the ageing terminal's tattered reputation.
He said falling shards of plaster injured a baggage handler and a security officer in the baggage area of the airport's Terminal 1, a 29 year-old building that has made it into several online lists of the world's worst airports.
Two cave-ins hit the terminal within hours of each other Tuesday, though the second did not harm anyone and in neither case were operations hampered, nor were passengers in any danger, terminal manager Dante Basanta said.
"Let's face it: Terminal 1 is 29 years old. It is showing signs of old age," he told AFP, adding the incidents are under investigation.
Built for 6.5 million passengers annually and used by all but three carriers on international flights, it handled 7.3 million travellers last year, Basanta said.
The terminal has been a frequent target of criticism with travelers and the business community complaining it is congested, run-down and filthy, with toilets that do not work.
Basanta said renovations on the terminal had begun last year.
