MANILA, Philippines -- Police officers patrolling a busy street in Makati City shot dead a man who tried to shoot his way out of a computer shop he robbed on Sunday evening, taking away cellular phones of the establishment's patrons, the city police said.
Case investigator Police Officer (PO) 3 Rico Caramat identified the suspect as Ronnie Bueno, 24, a resident of Parañaque city who tried fighting off responding police officers.
Initial investigation showed that officers from the nearby precinct 9 of the Makati police were patrolling along J.P. Rizal street about 6:45 p.m. when they noticed a black motorcycle parked outside the Dalimara Internet Cafe in Barangay (village) Poblacion.
PO2 Rafael Siguan Jr. and PO1 Ven Matthew Elman said in their report that they wanted to ask the driver why the motorcycle was parked and its license plate smudged with mud, so they got out of their patrol car and approached the driver. The man, however, fled immediately upon seeing the officers approaching him, Caramat said.
Sensing something irregular, the officers decided to inspect the Internet shop when Bueno came out. The suspect pulled out his .38-cal revolver and aimed the gun at the officers, but it misfired at least twice, according to the investigator.
"There were still duds inside the chamber," he said in an interview.
The two cops fired back, shooting the suspect immediately.
Minutes later, the suspect's mother arrived at the crime scene to identify Bueno, said Caramat, who then asked the woman how she knew about the shootout. Bueno's mother reportedly learned about the robbery and shooting "from a friend," the investigator recalled.
Police managed to return the stolen cellular phones to the victims as operatives started a manhunt for the motorcycle's driver who stood as a lookout.
