Go Fiber or Twisted Pair?
« on: July 21, 2009, 05:21:09 pm »
for a coming project, which do you prefer, fiber or twisted pair?  distance between two buildings is roughly 82 meters.  hindi po pwede ibaon yung mga cables, bale hanging or suspended ang siste so pls add that into consideration.  likewise, if id be using cat 6 for my run cable or fiber between the switches located in the two buildings, and cat 5e for my switch to workstation, would that pose a problem?  dagdag na rin kung anong brand maganda, belden po ba saka exact model nung mga cables.  ano ba difference nung plenum, jacketed, etc?

dagdag ko lang, mga 60 connected workstations kami ngayon running mixed speed from 10 and 100 mbps.  future expansion, aabot hanggang 100 workstations with our new units capable of running 1 GB.

dami ko tanong, ha ha ha.  TIA.

Pwede ba mag apply assistant mo. :)

For the interconnection of the two building I would recommend fiber rather than CAT6. CAT6 operates in higher frequency therefore susceptible to noise (since it will be used aerial outdoor). Also consider the height and distance of the building since you will be using aerial cable (the wear and tear of the cable). You might be interested in going wireless for your backbone. Wireless is reliable. There is no issue if you use CAT5e for your horizontal distribution. BELDEN is good since it offers higher specs than the standard cable. You may also consider PANDUIT or if you want lifetime warranty use CLIPSAL Titanium.

If you are looking for supplier and installer, just PM me at o.bandilla@yahoo.com hehehehehehe

You mentioned 82 meters.  Did you already include the housekeeping with this measurement? For me, it's too risky for this kind of distance. If you have the budget, just go for the fiber optic runs. If you can't put this underground, just make sure you place it in an enclosed cable tray. A good brand is SIMONS. Good luck with your project.

yep, 82 meters.  meron na kasi existing run dun and if i minus the numbers end to end, it says 87 meters.  but i'll be relocating one switch, thus 82 po ang kalalabasan.  working naman yung 87 meters, although may bottle-neck na at isang lan port lng papuntang server, 100 mbps speed, tapos medyo madami na clients accessing database.

parang hindi ata kaya enclosed cable tray at idadaan siya sa "messenger wire" ata tawag dun, he he he.

additional inputs badly needed.  maybe you can point me to a site with a similar set-up.

82 meters outside? Ill recommend mag wireless point to point nalang kayo.  ;)

Sa indoor naman I personally dont like cat5 cables. Im using cat 6 cables dito samen sa lahat.  ;D ;D  ;D

If you can't convince them, confuse them.

currently, mga 30 percent ang capable of gigabit speed tapos 70 percent 10/100 mbps pa lang.  project ko in the next 3 years yung 70 percent babagsak sa 40 percent na lang which will also be replaced by gigabit after another 3 years.  bale 6 years projected gigabit na lahat.  dami pa kasi ikakabit sa network, ip-camera, ip-pabx, etc.

if you have the money to spend, then go fiber. pwede ang fiber kahit aerial yan (depende sa kukunin mo na klase). nagpaquote ako dati ng fiber pero ang mahal grabe. ang switch palang to convert fiber to PC connection, wala na suko na ako (it was more than 80K)

then ang per meter ng fiber costs around 1500 per meter. so kahit na mga tipong 50 meters lang ang distance gagastos na ng mga more than 200K. too expensive

the advantage? kahit malayo yan no loss sa signal. pero the question is is it really worth it? are you really that in need of lossless signal?

hindi naman ganun ka importante ang network namin sa ngayon so opted for regular cat5e nalang muna

as mentioned, for now I prefer cat5e than cat6 since going cat6 entails upgrading existing hardware. sayang naman mag cat6 pero ang hardware mo hindi naman kaya ang speed ng cat6, mapapamahal ka lang

maybe in the future, upgrade nalang. the important thing is right now may existing network and it serves the purpose

pwede ba CAT6 for connecting DSL modem & wireless router? is there any issues?
