MANILA: A 10-year-old girl who flew in from the United States earlier this week has become the first Influenza A(H1N1) flu case in the Philippines, the health department said on Thursday.

The girl, whose nationality was not disclosed, arrived in the Philippines with her parents from the US and Canada on Monday but did not develop a fever until the following day, the health secretary said.

"The Department of Health is officially announcing this evening the first confirmed case of influenza A(H1N1) in the Philippines," Francisco Duque told reporters here by teleconference from the Geneva headquarters of the WHO.

The child no longer has a fever but her throat remains sore and she is under observation and her family quarantined, he said, adding that she had been prescribed anti-flu medication.

Health authorities are tracing people who have had contact with the girl since her arrival, Duque added, adding there was "no community-level outbreak" but urged public vigilance.

Seven other people are under observation at different Philippine hospitals but laboratory tests have not been completed, the official said.

"We reiterate to the public that the government is on top of the situation and everyone is advised to be vigilant," Duque said.

More than 11,000 cases and 85 deaths have been recorded worldwide since the outbreak of A(H1N1) influenza emerged in Mexico and the United States a month ago.

everybody gets common flu because it is endemic unlike swine flu it is a new flu so nobody knows  this virus. Prevention is best than cure as the medical practitioner says

Philippines is scared because if that flu spread in Manila it will be a major catastrophe because of concentration of people in the slum area many are weak because of malnutrition therefore casualty will be high. They will impose travel ban in the Philippines, our food supply is 70% import if they will impose travel ban many will starve it and unaffected will area suffer also and this will fuel the chaos currently happening.Economically investor  will leave the Philippines many companies will close leading to further chaos. Civil war will arise, rape, murder, and robbery will rule the streets. We are nowhere to go because the geography of the Philippines is Isolated and there is no land mass connecting to china or other countries therefore to go out to the country by means of boat and air but the thing is only few people can do that the major bulk of the population will be leave behind. So swine flu is not deadly right?

http://socioecohistory.wordpress.com/2009/05/02/swine-flu-tamiflu-and-a-pandemic-of-fear-cui-bono/

"This isn’t the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976, right before I entered medical school. I remember it very clearly. It resulted in a massive swine flu vaccine campaign. Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths. However, several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics. And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized"

avian flu is not dreaded as swine flu

with only 424 infected case and 214 deaths

unlike swine flu with 4694 laboratory-confirmed and 53 deaths

not really

in your point this only a profit propaganda

eventhough it is a propaganda

If the we get that flu or just a common flu with our current environment like basura everywhere. smoking everywhere, congested community and poor environmental sanitation especially NCR that environment are suitable for fast transmission. We don't have hospital to isolate that flu.

If we have a huge number of infected people either swine flu or flu something how will other countries will react to this sitution you cannnot say this is just a propaganda so don't give us  a Travel ban or this is just a weapon test

For the other countries that's their problem if Either profit or weapon test or etc.

::dontflame toast:: toast:: toast::

not as dreaded? maybe you mean much more dreaded.. avian flu has a 50% death rate, and swine flu only has around 1 in a hundred chance of killing you.. you said the numbers yourself.. ;D

weapon test? anong sinasabi mo mang idiot?

all i'm saying is wag masyadong magpaniwala sa napapanood sa TV. do not be a sheep and investigate the situation for yourself.

In the US alone, 36,000 people die from it.

Swine flu? So far, 150 people have died from it... pero hindi naman nasabi kung anong sitwasyon ng kalusugan nila noong tinamaan sila ng affliction na yon.

http://www2.macleans.ca/tag/avian-flu/

Avian flu (1997- )
Death toll: 257
Symptoms: Typical flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches).
How it spread: Most commonly passed along through contact with infected poultry, or surfaces contaminated with secretion/excretions from infected birds. Person-to-person transmission is very rare. The first major outbreak occured in Hong Kong in 1997, with 18 cases (six died). The most recent outbreak began in December 2003. Avian flu has killed more than 60 per cent of those who have contracted the virus.

2003-2009
avian flu data that 7 year period of data by who
with only 424 infected case and 214 deaths

Avian flu
61 laboratory cases/year and 30deaths/year

vs

Swine flu

4000 laboratory/year and 150deaths/year (as you said in your post)
so swine flu is much more dreaded than avian flu

US have complete protocols regarding this matter

unlike to Asia especially Pinas

we don't the capability to stop or even  prevent mass hysteria so it is better to promote safety even how Overreacted it is. So if there be cases in the Pinas and in huge numbers what will happen to us?

no need to panic

AFAIK currently there are 14 cases now in the Philippines but to small to cause widespread infection as long they don't infect in Manila.

Manila is a congested place even some says not dreaded as the common flu but still that place is favorable to widespread infection and difficult to quarantine

It is okay if it spread in the province area because it is easy to quarantine

. . Tsk Tsk
