I actually deferred writing about it last December as requested by telco insiders but looks like the cat is finally out the hat. Wi-Tribe Philippines did a soft launch recently offering WiMax broadband internet in Metro Manila.

We already knew that this new telco challenger, Liberty Telecoms, is a partnership between San Miguel Corporation and Q-Tel (Qatar Telecoms). The service is called Wi-Tribe and ads have been published on newspapers and flyers recently (I got a flyer yesterday).

Wi-Tribe is offering WiMax broadband internet for an introductory price of Php998 per month with up to 1Mbps bandwidth. There’s a 24-month lock-in period.

As a comparison, Globe Telecom introduced WiMax last year with a starting plan of 512Kbps for Php795. It now offers 1Mbps WiMax for Php995.

A number of beta-testers have been using the Wi-Tribe service for several months now. If you’re one of them, let us know you impression of the service.

The San Miguel and QTel partnership is a solid one that could prove to be a formidable challenger to the current broadband internet market. We always welcome competition.

why is everyone investing on technology thats not gona be around for very long, buti pa smart invested in both LTE and WiMax while Globe and SMC stuck with WiMax:

Pagkatapos introduce ng industry ang wifi ay nagkaron ng wimax.  Meron na ito sa Malaysia last year pa. Unfortunately, meron na rin mas higit na mabilis ngayon sa wimax.

The problem ay hindi agad nakakapagpalit ng mga hardware ang mga telcos to cope up with the advances in technology. Pangalawa, walang bangko agad ang mabilis mag decision na pautangin sila to upgrade their systems.  So si Mr. Dela Cruz has to put up with their lousy services.  Walang garantisa sa bilis ang internet connection.  Ang masakit pa nito, walang consumer group na ipinaglalaban ang interes ng publiko hinggil dito sa pagkakaroon ng minimum internet speed.

this is true. as of now, wi tribe is offering a bandwidth cap of 3GB per month. your speed of 1Mbps will be cut into 256 Kbps after surpassing the said 3GB limit. It will then refresh to the original spped the next billing cycle.


I'm actually subscribed to Wi-Tribe and I can say that it is impressive (thinking that my computer is currently working slow right now). An insider actually told me that the 3GB bandwidth cap will soon be a legend. a lot of them actually fought for the said issue and It is now for final approval. It might not be the "unlimited" plan as what most of us is expecting but a more reasonable cap for us Filipinos. 10 GB maybe?
