: Philippines planning to buy 12 fighter jets from south korea
: asanti June 21, 2012, 09:49:42 AM
The Philippines is now upgrading its military capability after the Panatag standoff. The concentration of the modernization program is on the Philippine Air Force via procurement of fighter jets

Gazmin said the reported purchase of T50 fighter jets from South Korea is not yet definite as an evaluation team is still conducting “window shopping” in other countries.

“The T50 is just one of the candidates for our leading fighter jets,” said Gazmin.

A T50 costs some P1.2 billion and the Philippine government is planning to buy 12 fighter jets.

Another option is the Super Tucano in Brazil, he said.

Aside from fighter jets, the Philippine government is also planning to buy helicopters and other military hardware that would serve the need to strengthen the country’s territorial defense following the Scarborough standoff with China.

in my opinion, at this moment it is much better kung air at naval defense na lang ang palakasin like buying surface to air at ground to ground missiles na lang ang bilhin. sa tingin ko saka na lang bumili ng jet fighters kung malakas na yung depensa natin dahil wala din itong silbi kung ngayon pa lang tayo magta-train ng mga pilots para gamitin itong mga bagong jet fighters.
at isa pa, no match etong bibilhin natin sa J-20 ng china which is equivalent sa F-22 ng US.

Multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle or also know as MIRV. It can wipe out the entire military installation of the opponent. Libre lang mangarap eh.   ;D

dahil every take off nyan at every landing may na-expire na pyesa na kailangan palitan

mas maganda pa ang infiltration at maging terrorist sa china kaysa dito may ransom kapa konti manpower at konting equipment can create a chaos no need huge military arsenal

Malapit na siguro matuloy yung deal with South Korea and its FA-50...

KAI is currently conducting final negotiations with the Philippines for the sale of 12 FA-50 aircraft at a cost of PHP18.9bn ($463.3m), to help the country's air force to counter airborne threats and also train its pilots on supersonic high-performance weapons platforms.
In addition to training, the aircraft will be used for interdiction and disaster response, reconnaissance and surveying operations.

The FA-50 was developed by Korean Aerospace Industries and Lockheed Martin and is currently the most advanced fighter version of the T-50 family of aircraft, which consists of:
-the T-50 Golden Eagle trainer version
-the TA-50 light attack version
-the FA-50 light multi-role fighter version
An even more advanced version has been proposed and is known as the F-50.

PH is buying junk aircraft from korea, parang surplus lang.

FA-50 is not as advanced as the high-end jets being used by US or European countries but when it comes to bang for buck, this aircraft is high tech enough. Hindi ito junk at surplus, ito din ang bibilhin ng South Korea to augment their own airforce ("FA-50 fighters will replace A-37 attack jets and F-4/F-5 fighters in the low-tier backup to the Air Force's high-end KF-16s and F-15Ks" - http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/rok/a-50.htm), bago yung bibilhin natin at hindi second hand.

Buying these kind of equipment for our armed forces doesn't mean China will fear us, it doesn't mean we are now safe from 1st world bullies like China, it just means we now have the capability to at least send a couple of these jets within our territory for whatever purpose it may serve.

The next president(Binay or Roxas or Revilla or Gordon) should continue to modernize our armed forces.

 ::moreinfo

Kelangan din natin yan pero stick to the topic of fighter jets muna.

q0 or 12 jets for the philippines?  someone is on a spending binge!  in my opinion, 6 of those plus a couple of helis will be a better "upgrade" for the country's military capability upgrade.  there are situations that such jets will not be "suitable" and helis will better serve the purpose and given that our helis are way too old, id rather have 6 jets plus a couple of "new" helis for a realistic upgrade.  para lang yang perimeter defense for say 10 hectare lot - bumili ka agad ng 10 grenade launcher when in fact ang mga handguns na gamit ay lahat paltik at luma pa. id rather that the purchase be 2 grenade launchers and several handguns and rifles as well as miscellaneous items like COMMS, etc.  that will be a better upgrade path.

TS, is this the only hardware included in the purchase program or there are other hardwares included?

"The Philippine Air Force has chosen 12 KAI TA-50 aircraft to fulfill requirement for a light attack trainer. The Philippines Department of National Defence (DND) announced the selection of the type in August 2012.[61] Philippines' Congress approved funding for 12 trainer aircraft in September 2012.[88] However, the Korean government has stated that the aircraft had not been ordered and that the two nations have to first reach an agreement on its export.[89] In late January 2013, state media reported that the FA-50, not the TA-50 as earlier reported, was selected with 18.9 billion pesos (US$464 million) set aside for 12 aircraft; contract negotiations are underway.[90]"
