If you are talking of an assault weapon, the ak47 is still the best.  Talk of velocity, effective range, etc.  You can fire it and still will be effective in any kind of shooting or combat situation.  In terms of economics, the ak47 is easier to obtain and much cheaper. Kaya nga nakakapag taka why the AFP is still insisting on using the M16 or M14 when we are near Russia or China which can supply us these weapons on more liberal terms.

The PNP can use the paratrooper version of the AK47 which is of shorter length and easier to carry for the small built of a Filipino.
[AK47 is not the standard rifle of Russia today. By the 1970s seeing the disadvantages of AK47 over the M16, the Russians replaced thier standard rifle to AK-74. AK-74 have almost the same size as the M16 bullet.]

[Mas magaling parin ang 5.56mm NATO over the 7.62mm AK. By the 1970s, because of disadvantages of AK47 over M16 the Russians replaced their standard rifle issue from AK-47 to AK-74. AK-74 has almost exact dimensions as the 5.56mm Nato bullet.]

In the Philippines where battle field conditions do not require long range shooting. The trade off in power when you choose a 5.56 NATO round is more than compensated by the lower ammo-to-weight ratio and pin point accuracy.

This is best illustrated by the development of an indigenous snipper riffle by the Philippine Marines on the M16A1 platform using the 5.56 NATO round sayasaya::

In fairness, I'd  like to admit that the MSSR's development and use by the Philippine Marines  isnt about the issue of the quality of the 5.56 NATO round vis-a-vis others like the former eastern bloc 7.62. The choice of the M-16 platform with a 5.56 ammo was result of the  Navy's effort to make do with what was available in its arsenal considering the lack of funds to acquire heavy caliber snipper riffles from abroad.

I'm proud to say that  the MSSR can very well hold its ground in terms of performance in local conditions and its continued use by the marines is a testament to our ingenuity as a people.
