Tsinoy traders cancel annual PHL-Chinese friendship gala

The country's Filipino-Chinese businessmen have called off their annual celebration of friendship between the Philippines and China.

The Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc (FFCCCII) was supposed to commemorate Philippine Independence Day and the 40th anniversary of Philippine-China diplomatic ties through an event in Pasay City on Monday night.

The chamber's executive committee, however, decided over the weekend to make the annual event solely an Independence Day celebration, attended by President Benigno Aquino III.

As a result, Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua, who was supposed to deliver a message during the event based on the original programme, was no longer asked to attend.

FFCCCII president Angel Ngu said this was the "most prudent" way of dealing with the current situation between the two countries.

"Nakita naman natin sa West Philippine Sea, the tension seems to be escalating. So we think as a Filipino, we think siguro this is not a good time naman," Ngu told reporters before the event.

The businessman noted how some Chinese were hurt by President Aquino's recent statements comparing Chinese actions in disputed territories to Nazi imperialism.

He nevertheless expressed hope that ties between the Philippines and China will improve in the future.

Earlier in the day, presidential spokesman Sec. Edwin Lacierda said the Philippines has no conflict with the Chinese people, and maintains good relationship with Beijing despite the territorial row.

'Mutual respect'

President Benigno Aquino III during the FFCCCII event called for "mutual respect" between the Philippines and China as the two countries continue to assert their claims over disputed territories in the South China Sea.

In a speech, Aquino stressed how the Philippines values its sovereignty.

The President added that all countries should be "responsible members" of the community of nations.

"In trade and in investments, as with other aspects of our relations with China, there is much that we can improve on, as long as our relationship is based on mutual respect," Aquino said.

"It is our determination to maintain fairness and harmony, and our commitment to the rule of law," he added.

Manila and Beijing have been locked in a territorial dispute over resource-rich parts of the South China Sea over the past years.

China uses its so-called “nine-dash line” to assert ownership over almost the entire South China Sea, while the Philippines uses the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as its basis for its claim.

The Philippines, which calls the disputed areas the “West Philippine Sea,” has already sought international arbitration before a Netherlands-based tribunal to nullify China’s massive claims over South China Sea.

Beijing, however, has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings, insisting instead on bilateral talks to settle the dispute.
