PSU ranking and tier (as of FEB 2016)
« on: April 27, 2016, 10:46:17 pm »
list from toms hardware (its the most recent I could find, the rest are from 2015). also the tier numbers are different depending on which site its coming from (some sites have up to tier 7)
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

Tier One
The highest quality and most stable Power Supply Units available. Protected by industrial grade protection circuitry and can output wattage at a rated maximum temperature of 50°C or below. These units are also Haswell certified, meaning they can cope with the C6 and C7 sleep states of 0.05Amps without triggering the under-current protection switch. May even go over labelled wattage and still work until it safely shuts down.

Tier Two
As above, just slightly lower quality. Still safe to use and are all stable for any PC of today's standards, including Haswell C Stepping certification. Recommended for those on a fairly limited budget.

Tier Three

Still safe to use and stable, just lower quality components. Not really ideal in serious overclocking or super-high load situations, such as a Bitcoin mining rig or a high end gaming system.

Tier Four

Built down to a low price. Not exactly the most stable units ever created. Very basic safety circuitry or even thin gauge wiring used. Not for gaming rigs or overclocking systems of any kind. Avoid unless your budget dictates your choice.

Tier Five
Avoid IMMEDIATELY. These units are highly unsafe to use. No such protections added, very thin gauge wiring used, false advertising and too much to list. Reference to a higher tiered unit for a better, money saving and a much safer unit. For your safety's sake, please don't order or pick one up for use in your system. These units are a potential fire hazard and could even kill you, let alone your system.

well, kung ang tanong is ano ang the best na ilagay sa setup, then the answer will always be those coming from tier 1. kaso the consideration is price, in which case you can opt for those in tier 2 or 3, or kung talagang kulang sa budget, tier 4

ako personally, the PSU i have now is tier 3 (M12II), before that I used the Cooler master VS series- semi modular (the one mentioned here is tier 2 but thats the enhance version, the older VS should be in tier 3)

according to the list its not, in this list its tier 4. in another list its tier 6 (out of 7). you can give your opinion but this list has been compiled by experts. the seasonic m12 has been consistent in being tier 3 both lists (the S12 here has not been rated but on the other list its tier 3)

and special mention has been said about the corsair CX on the other list by the person who compiled it:

Quote
General advice? Pick a good PSU for your system and let it last. Choose one from a good OEM, one that's known for being high quality, and is as high up on this list as you can get for your budget. Balance out your builds and don't pick flagship components like CPU and GPU combined with a tier 6 PSU. People don't hate on the Corsair CX because it's a CX, but because people are pairing it with OC'd i7s and two flagship GPUs and wonder why they break.

and from the list compiled from tomshardware:

thank you for quick response :)  i was unsure which to pick that Seasonic M12II-620 EVO ATX 2.3 or Corsair CX Series 600Watt Modular because they were almost at the same price range, i just went with seasonic because it seemed like more thrust worthy manufacturer.

Seasonic >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Corsair CX.

Good choice.  ;)

Exactly, seems the conversation on the new list begins exactly as the one on the old list ended, with the Corsair CX series, bane of builders everywhere. CX series is a poor choice for systems with gaming cards or overclocked systems, let's just get that right on out of the way now for future reference. Ok for mainstream machines, not dependable for gaming rigs.

Thanks for the update dottorrent, really is a helpful list.

@ darkbreeze, "CX series, bane of builders everywhere" haha so true. Can't blame people for wanting to save money and not waste it but the near constant 'sales' of the cx series in the $30-40 range really is a burn since it seems to sucker tons of unknowing folks to grabbing it (and giving it unwarranted 5 star ratings purely because it's cheap).

Anyway, ok syang reference kasi well-researched at madaming laman.

yung mga sinasabi mo na mga ibang brands actually they are around on older lists (i.e. TT litepower is tier 6 on the 2015 list from linustechtips). they were most likely pruned on the newer lists kasi hindi na under production nor being sold sa US. it was also mentioned in one of comments that in other countries older PSUs were still being used and some other brands were there but not in the list/s. one of the reasons kung bakit wala sa list is probably because it hasn't been reviewed since a. it wasn't released in the US, b. limited time release, it was only released for a short period before it became unavailable, or c. the product only had a very limited market that people just haven't tried them.

about naman sa antec VP, I also read the comments and when I viewed the other lists, it turns out marami pala klaseng VP kaya siguro nagkaron ng confusion (i.e. Basic VP, Basic VP-F, Basic BP, VP, BP, etc)
