Its international name peculiarly sounds like Saiyan. I hope it doesn't go super saiyan on us.
There is enough time to prepare, specially for those in the Visayas, Southern Luzon & NCR.

November 5, 2013

Tropical Storm Haiyan, roughly 500 miles south-southeast of Guam, is gathering strength in a favorable environment of light winds aloft and warm sea-surface temperatures.

Haiyan's forecast west-northwest track will keep it well south of Guam, however, it will also put it on a collision course with the Philippines later this week.

According to the latest forecast from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (shown in the second graphic at right), Haiyan may approach super typhoon status (sustained winds at least 150 mph) before reaching the central Philippines Friday morning, local time (Thursday evening, U.S. time).

Given this more southern track than past tropical cyclones this season, the Philippine capital of Manila, home to roughly 12 million people in the metro area, is in danger of a direct strike by Haiyan Friday night or Saturday local time (Friday, U.S. time).

Haiyan is the Chinese word for petrel, a type of bird that lives over the open sea and returns to land only for breeding. Haiyan is the 28th named storm of the 2013 Western Pacific typhoon season.

Stay safe and be prepared.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects Haiyan to intensify to 120 knots/138.1 mph/222.2 kph as it approaches the central Philippines on Nov. 8. That strength is equal to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.

http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/haiyan-northwestern-pacific-ocean/#.Unl9sXDB0f4

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. This scale estimates potential property damage.

Category 4 (major)

130-156 mph
113-136 kt
209-251 km/h

Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Major Rey Balido said Metro Manila and the regions of Caraga, Mimaropa, Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao have all been placed under "Blue Alert" as the cyclone approached the Philippines.

Dadivas said Haiyan will be locally named "Yolanda" once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Thursday.

sa mga hindi alam kung gaano kalakas ang category 5:

sustained winds of 157mph or 137kt or 252kph or higher.

Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

bisitahin nyo rin yung source, meron silang animation kung gaano kalakas or kung anong damage ang kayang gawin mula category 1 hanggang category 5.

Typhoon Haiyan, strongest storm ever. In recorded history! - Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC)

I guess some Filipinos aren't really aware of the strength of this super typhoon or maybe we are so used to typhoons that we are now numb at the possible devastation that it brings with it.

Stay safe and strong everyone.

some storm chasers/meteorologists on twitter:

Robert Speta ‏@robertspeta 16h
According to JTWC, Typhoon Haiyan, strongest storm ever. In recorded history! Typhoon Tip. Winds 304kph. Haiyan. 314kph. Sustained!

Jim Edds ‏@ExtremeStorms 16h
Just saw 2 workers in the restaurant at where I'm staying show Up for work. Are you kidding me?
(This dude is in Tacloban right now. LOL!)

Jim Edds ‏@ExtremeStorms 16h
I keep telling everyone here how powerful the typhoon is but they don't seem to comprehend what's coming.

Jim Edds ‏@ExtremeStorms 16h
@vincesanga indeed, always smiling
(This Filipino "trait" never fails to amaze foreigners.  ;D )

It has started...

James Reynolds ‏@typhoonfury 16h
Power just failed in Tacloban, hotel generator just kicked in. Bring on sunrise! #typhoon #YolandaPH #Haiyan

"According to [JTWC] forecast track, Manila is now expected to be impacted by the northeastern quadrant, the strongest side of the storm," NASA said.

The space agency quoted Brian McNoldy, a senior research associate at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in Miami, Fla. as saying that Yolanda attained "perfection" November 7 by reaching 8.0 on the Dvorak scale, the highest possible value.

@EricHolthaus
Real-time intensity rating for #YolandaPH now 8.1 on 8.0 scale. I've never seen that before. [link to 1.usa.gov]

The JTWC on Friday morning said Yolanda continued to intensify just before landfall. It is now packing maximum sustained winds of 315 kph (170 knots) and gusts reaching 380 kph (205 knots).

i heard sa news may mga evacuees na inilagay sa mga covered court.

hindi sila safe doon. posibleng matanngal ang roof or worst magcollapse sa mga evacuees.

WTF are our Gov't officials thinking... dahil may bubong safe na? tapos zero casualties daw target.

MANILA – The state weather bureau's headquarters in Manila said it has lost contact with the weather station in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, the site where typhoon Yolanda first made landfall on Friday morning.

PAGASA forecaster Jori Loiz said the extent of damage in Guiuan is not yet known as all communication to the area has been cut.

Loiz said their last contact with state forecasters in Guiuan was at 4 a.m., 40 minutes before Yolanda made its first landfall.

Loiz said they are also having a hard time reaching the weather station in nearby Tacloban City.

The governor (of Leyte) said the entire province is now without electricity, and all major roads have been rendered impassable due to toppled trees.

Katrina vs Haiyan

Look at Katrina’s eye. It’s perfectly round. The center is black, meaning there are only a few low clouds near the surface. The inner-eye wall looks like a series of concentric rings, steadily moving up the color scale. The eye is surrounded by a symmetric, thick, intense ring of strong thunderstorms, called the “central dense overcast.”

Every part of Haiyan’s central dense overcast is colder than the coldest parts of Katrina. If you were imagining the strongest hurricane ever, this is basically what it would look like.
