An American medical professional has accused a Kuwaiti firm of recruiting 51 Filipinos for jobs in Dubai and sending them instead to strife-torn Iraq to help build – under subhuman conditions – a US Embassy complex.
Testifying before the Oversight Committee of the US Congress last week, Rory Mayberry assailed the US State Department for covering up the abuse committed against the Filipinos by the First Kuwait Trading & Contracting Co.
The panel was investigating the performance of the State Department and its contractors involved in the construction of the $600-million embassy complex, said to be the biggest in the world. There is an existing Philippine government ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq.
US Embassy press attaché Matthew Lussenhop declined to comment on the allegations. “Nothing to say at this point, we don’t have anything to say,†he told The STAR over the phone.
