Taiwanese firm leaves Pinoy seamen stranded aboard ship
« on: July 29, 2013, 05:41:03 am »
MANILA - Twenty Filipino seamen and a Pakistani ship captain have been stranded for months aboard a cargo ship in Malta.

In a phone patch interview on Monday, seafarer Edgardo Hinobiagon told ABS-CBN News that their situation aboard the cargo ship A Ladybug, a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), have become desperate as they have already run out of fuel and is now dangerously low on food and other supplies.

This, after their employer, a Taiwanese shipping company, abandoned them to fend for themselves following a major problem with the company's finances.

Hinobiagon is one of the 20 Filipino crew of A Ladybug, with Pakistani Zafar Abbsi as their captain. They complain that they have not received their salaries for three months already, even though 11 of them have already completed their contracts, while 4 are set to finish theirs by August.

"Ilaw araw na lang ang pagkain namin, bina-budget na lang para hindi kami maubusan," he said.

Captain Abbsi said that they have already requested the Maltese government for emergency fuel supplies.

"Our situation is very dangerous because we have no light, and since we have no power, our ship cannot move from this place if the weather is bad, or if another ship would collide with us," he said. He said that they have been waiting outside Malta for two months.

The group has already sought help from the International Transport Federation. The Department of Foreign Affairs said that they are still checking on this report.
