PH coast guard to conduct massive hiring in 2016

The Philippine Coast Guard will be hiring 900 new personnel in 2016 in its bid to strengthen the nation’s civilian maritime force.

In an article written by Raymund Antonio for Manila Bulletin on December 28, it was disclosed that the massive recruitment is meant to address the uniformed service’s current shortage on manpower.

“We are allowed by DBM to hire 900 for 2016. These are uniformed personnel,” said Rear Admiral William Melad, the PCG’s acting commandant.

At present, only 8,807 PCG personnel are guarding the coastlines of the Philippines’ 7,107 islands, with only three to four operatives assigned per post.

Next year, three new vessels from Japan, and four from France will be arriving in the country for the use of the PCG; enabling it to patrol the country’s 36,289-kilometer long coastal borders more efficiently.

“I intend to give the task to the functional

commands so they would be the ones to implement specialized training,” Melad said; referring to the preparations that will be undertaken by those who will be hired.

Separating from the Philippine Navy (PN) in 1998, the PCG has been established under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) as an organization that will implement and enforce the country’s maritime laws.

Unlike the PN, the PCG is a non-military force, which allows it to conduct sea operations on the country’s maritime borders without being considered by neighboring nations as an act of war.

The PCG is currently tasked to perform five functions, including maritime safety, security, search and rescue, and enforcement, and marine environmental protection.

According to the agency’s official website, the organization aims to reach a troop ceiling capacity of 25,000 personnel by the year 2020.

hope this materializes and the budget won't be realigned for whatever reasons they may think of... we really need a strong presence in the oceans...
