there must be applications running that is why there's a beach ball icon spinning you can either force quit by pressing together option command and power button or Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. to reset

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Insert mo yung diagnostic cd na masala whenyou bought your Mac then boot to cd ka. Then you'll have the utilities options available syo. Just run the verify scripts.

Anong Mac na gamit mo? Macbook? iMac? or MacPro?

boot to os install disc ka (insert disc ) shutdown then hold down option key while turning on
click mo ung icon ng install disc another way of booting to the disc is to hold down C while re-booting up
pag andun ka na sa OS install screen choose a language tapos click mo ung arrow/ continue once lang then tingnan mo ung menu bar sa taas ng screen click mo utilities then disk utility tapos pag up na ung disk utility screen click mo machintosh hd then repair disk pag wla error msg in red ibig sabihin nun ok ang HD try mo mag restart pag ganun pa rin need mo ire-install ang OS nyan

Sorry na click ko yung post...

Additional info... get another Macintosh, connect it with firewire (400 o 800 depende sa mac mo) Power up mo yung ayos na Mac and then power up mo yung sira pero click mo yung T sa keyboard, Antayin mo lumabas yung icon ng Hard Disk mo na sira sa screen ng ayos na Mac and then you can back up your files and fix your hard disk.
