math puzzles muna po tau
« on: October 22, 2006, 09:37:33 am »
1. The square of 13 is 169.  Take the last digit of the square, 9, and place it in the middle, making 196.  This is the square of 14, the next number above 13.  What are the next numbers which also have this property?
----------------------------------
2. arrange the ten digits 0 to 9 in three arithmetical sums, using three of the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and using no signs except the ordinary ones implying those operations.  Here is an example to make it quite clear:

3 + 4 = 7          9 - 8 = 1          5 X 6 = 30

But, the example is not correct, as the number 2 has not been used and the number 3 has been used twice.  Can you come up with a valid solution?
----------------------------------
3. Two trains are on a head on collision course. The trains are currently 65 miles apart. The north bound train is traveling at 55 miles per hour and the south bound train is traveling at 80 miles per hour. What is the distance between the trains two minutes before they collide?
----------------------------------
+1 pokepoint for the first one to answer it correctly

hahahahaha. nakakabaliw pero nakita ko sagot sa google! hehehehehehe

1.
The answer is 157 squared is 24649, and 158 squared is 24964.

2.
7 + 1 = 8          9 - 6 = 3          4 X 5 = 20

3.
If the trains are moving toward each other we combine their speeds to give us their speed basis. So: 55+80 = 135 mph. Divide this speed by 60 minutes to give the speed they are traveling each minute = 2.25 miles/minute. Therefore, 2 minutes before impact they are 4.5 miles apart.

nandaya ako! hahahahahaha

tama yung number 3.... short cut lang yung solution kaya hindi masyado agreeable

eto mas detailed na sagot

first you should estimate how long the trains will collide (in minutes)

speed of both trains is 2.25 miles per minute (0.92 for first train, 1.33 for second) so they will collide in about 28.90 minutes

then deduct two minutes from that and estimate the distance covered by each train in that time

so around 26.90 minutes, in that time 1st train would have covered 24.75 miles and 2nd train 35.78, which is about 60.53 miles

then 65 - 60.53 = 4.47 miles so malapit na sa 4.5 miles the .03 variance can be attributed to rounding off of numbers

i strongly disagree din with no.3

65 mi apart sila

one is moving at a speed of 55mph
the other is moving at a speed of 80mph

kung x ay total time ng byahe nila
ibig sabihin
ung distance travelled by one is 55x
and ung the other is 80x

pag pinag-add mo sila
un ung 65 dapat

so 55x+80x=65
135x=65
x=65/135
x=13/27 hr

eto ung time ng tatakbuhin nila before the collision
so 13/27 - 2/60
kasi ung total time and two minutes b4
difference is 121/270

so 55mph x 121/270hr ung distance travelled by one
=1331/54 mi
ung isa nman 80mph x 121/270 hr
=968/27 mi

total distance is 65mi
so 65 mi - 1331/54 mi - 968/27 mi
=4/1/2mi

ibig sabihin 4.5 mi sila b4 mag-collide

ay
oo nga
4.5 mi nga
ngek

nakakahiya nmn

ang mata-talinao nyo..  ;D
ito naman yung sa akin.. same reward, +1 pokepoint for the first one to answer it correctly!
here it goes...
----------------------------
1. "If I don't go now, I will be late for the queen's ball," muttered the Duchess.
Alice looked around the room and said, "How can you know you are late? You have three clocks on the wall, each showing a different time. One shows 18 minutes to 6 p.m.; one shows 2 minutes past 6 p.m.; and the other shows 10 minutes past 6 p.m."
"That's easy," said the Duchess. "Everybody knows that one of my clocks is off my 7 minutes, one is off by 15 minutes and the other is off by 13 minutes. But nobody knows if they are slow or fast or which one is off by how much."
With that, the Duchess rushed to the ball, leaving Alice to figure out the puzzling system of keeping time. What is the correct time?

2. A goat is tethered to a post with a rope that is 42 feet long. Thus, the goat can graze the field over a circle with a 42 foot radius. The owner of the goat built a shed 14 x 28 feet, using the goat's tethering post as a corner of the shed.
Using pi as 22/7, what is the reduced grazing area for the goat?
---------------------------
3. An electrical engineer ordered 9 boxes of 1,000 ohm resistors and 1 box of 1,100 ohm resistors from Error-free Electronics Ltd. However, when the order arrived, it was found that the boxes were unmarked and the resistors were not color-coded. What is the minimum number of measurements and the minimum number of resistors in the measurements to identify the box of 1,100 ohm resistors?

for the goat

original area = (22/7)(21)(21)
in-enclosed sa rectangle
dapat divided by four na agad ung area
pasok ung width sa radius
e ndi pasok sa length ang radius
e di na-cut ung area
ndi ko na alam

area of circle is = pi r(squared)

so it should be: area = 22/7 x 42 x 42 (not 21)

area  circle = 5544 feet

area of rectangle (the shed) = 392 feet

reduced grazing area = 5152 feet

the third problem will deal will probability and combination... taking into account that there are nine color codes for resistors

wala akong calculator dito so i wont solve this one

eto yung sagot..
1. Answer
5:55 p.m.
Solution: Clock 1 shows 5:42 p.m.; Clock 2 shows 6:02 p.m.; and Clock 3 shows 6:10 p.m. The difference in time shown by the clocks:
Clocks 1 and 2: 20 minutes
Clocks 1 and 3 is 28 minutes
Clocks 2 and 3 is 8 minutes
This gives two possible cases:
Case One
Clock 1 is 13 minutes slow and Clock 3 is 15 minutes fast; Clock 1 is 13 minutes slow and Clock 3 is 15 minutes fast; Clock 2 is 7 minutes fast and Clock 3 is 15 minutes fast. This means Clock 1 is 13 minutes slow, Clock 2 is 7 minutes fast and Clock 3 is 15 minutes fast. Therefore, the actual time is 5:55 p.m.
Case Two
Clock 1 is 13 minutes fast and Clock 2 is 7 minutes slow; Clock 1 is 13 minutes fast and Clock 3 is 7 minutes slow; Clock 2 is 7 minutes slow and Clock 3 is 15 minutes slow. This means that Clock 1 is 13 minutes fast, with a time of 5:29; Clock 2 is 7 minutes slow, with a time of 6:09 p.m.; and Clock 3 is 15 minutes slow, with a time of 6:25 p.m. Therefore, Case Two is not valid.

2. Answer
4,928 ft.2
Solution: The total area of the circle = 42 x 42 x 22/7 = 5,544 ft.2.
3/4 of the circle = area A = 4,158 ft.2.
1/4 of the circle with 14 ft. radius = area B = 1/4 x 22/7 x 14 x 14 = 154 ft.2.
1/4 of the circle with 28 ft. radius = area C = 1/4 x 22/7 x 28 x 28 = 616 ft.2.
Thus, the total area that the goat can graze is 4,928 ft.2.

3. Answer
One measurement, 45 resistors
Solution: Mark the boxes from 1 to 10. Take one resistor from the box marked #1, two resistors from the box labeled #2, and so on up to taking nine resistors from the box marked #9 (making 45 resistors in all). Connect them in a series and take one measurement. Subtract 45,000 from the resistance reading and devide the result by 100. The answer should be a digit from 0 to 9, indicating the number of the box containing 1,100 ohm resistors. The answer 0 would indicate that the 1,100 ohm resistors are in the box marked #10.

Q:A large water tank has two inlet pipes (a large one and a small one) and one outlet pipe. It takes 3  hours to fill the tank with the large inlet pipe. On the other hand, it takes 6  hours to fill the tank with the small inlet pipe. The outlet pipe allows the full tank to be emptied in 9  hours.

What fraction of the tank (initially empty) will be filled in 2.57  hours if all three pipes are in operation? Give your answer to two decimal places (e.g., 0.25, 0.5, or 0.75).

1/3 + 1/6 = 1/x; x = time required to fill the tank completely
x = 2 hours

hanggang dun lang ang sigurado ko
eto na ung hula part

so kung in 2 hours, puno na sya
in 2.57 hours, na walang ilalabas, 128.5% na ung laman ng tank.

2.57/9 = fraction nung natanggal
tapos pinagminus

1.285 - 0.285 = 1
puno ung tank in 2.57 hours

ngek!
mali!

hehehe...

1/3 + 1/6 - 1/9 = 1/x

Sum of all the works done and X is time to complete the work ( + to fill, - to empty).

X = 2.57 Hrs. + so full.
