The squadron of FA50 fighter jets acquired by the government at P18.9 billion will have little use under a Mayor Rodrigo Duterte presidency in which national defense will be a lesser concern compared to education, health, and agriculture programs.
Duterte, the PDP-Laban standard bearer, made this clear as he described the first two FA50s delivered to the country as a “waste of money.†He said those jets and the 10 others still pending delivery may have little or no use at all in addressing the insurgency problem.
Duterte said allocating government’s meager financial resources to prepare for war against China is just illogical since the 12 FA50 fighter jets will be confronted by at least 3,000 units of state-of-the-art Chinese airpower.
“You know we cannot go to war. We cannot join a force that is being planned by America,†the Davao City mayor told students of the University of the Philippines in Los Baños City, Laguna.
“There is posturing right now. It would be for the best interest of the country just to avoid participating in it,†he said.
In his earlier discussions about the Philippines and China’s quarrel over the West Philippine Sea areas, Duterte said that he is open to joint exploration of the contested territories in a bid to settle the dispute.
He said military defense should be used to address local insurgency.

Matanong ko lang. Alam mo ba kung anung purpose ng Fa-50? Alam mo ba na isa yung Lead-in fighter TRAINER at hindi naman talaga yun binili para pang tapat sa china? Bakit nyo ba pinipilit na pang laban sa china yun? At sino ba ang nag sabi sa inyo na gusto ng pilipinas makipag gera at makipag tapatan sa china? Hindi mo ba alam kung ano ang concepto ng "minimum credible defense"?

Ang siste eh ganito. Tangapin muna natin na kanila yun, issurender muna natin yung claim natin then tska pag uusapan kung ano ang pwede natin makuha. Malinaw ang china na pag hindi tinangap ng ibang bansa ang kundisyon na yan, walang pag uusapan. Opening up discussion on joint exploration does not mean we will kiss the asses of china on whatever demands they have. In every dispute, amicable discussion is still the most cost efficient way to resolve an issue.

1. If anyone threaten to use force and armed conflict then I expect them to be met with even greater force. To the point that they will think twice or trice before making the decission to take up arms.
2. As ive said, education has its own budget. So does defense.. Just because we spend 18.9 billuon on figther jet doesnt mean we took the 18.9b from education. Want more fund for education? Lobby in congress..

As for Digong. If you read my previous post the you might have read that I used to like the guy.
As for minimun credible defense. Its very simple. It simply aims to have the capability to fight back. It doesnt aim to win by having a more potent force, it doesnt even aim to achieve parity. It simply aims to have the capability to "hurt" so that agressors will think twice. This is in fact the aim of every ASEAN nation. None can hope to chalenge china but atleast have the means to hurt them and make them bleed. And here the philippines is very very very far behind.

Hindi sila rebelde. Terorista sila. Siguro nung panahon ni Marcos may pinaglalaban sila. Kita mo yung latest exploit nang npa yung kinawatan yung relief goods? E yung pangingidnap nung mga mnlf sa mga inosente? Pagusapan? Ang problema nga kasi ayaw nang China nang joint exploration. Gusto nila kanila lang. Kahit nung ilang years pa na hindi pa mainit ang south china sea at wala pa sa eksena ang US e binabarakidahan na nang China yung mga isla at ayaw makipagusap sa mga SEA countries.
BTW I actually agree that education should be one of the top priorities since yan ang ugat nang kahirapan/kasamaan etc. But that doesn't mean you should not give the AFP the minimum requirements to combat our local pests.

Education is really the top priority. It always has been. In fact the Phillipine constitution mandates that Defense expenditure should never go higher than education. To alot more funds in defense than education is to violate the constitution..

agree... china will not honor that decision... so what now after that? do we just turn a blind eye and pretend that nothing has happened in the wps... yes, we can't win against china's superior firepower but it doesn't mean that we just have to stand by and watch china claim all the islands there without doing anything... let's face reality that threat is not just internal but also external and i hope if duterte wins, he will recognize the fact that we have to do something out there also...

Again, fa-50 is first and foremost, a LIFT (lead-in fighter TRAINER). Please read more about this kind of aircraft so you could better understand its true purpose.. Dont rely too much on local mainstream meeja. Often they cant even tell the difference between an APC and a Tank.

Anong gagawin ng dalawang pirasong KAI FA 50 laban sa 73 na Su-30 MKK ng China. Ang LIFT trainers ay binibili para may comparable na training platform in preparation for MRFs. That way di masayang ang flight hours ng dedicated na mga fighter planes.

the reason is that it will act as an interim fighter until such time our pilots are trained to handle more sophisticated planes... is that not enough reason... we all know our pilots don't have enough experience yet... but at the same time, it can be used as a 1st line of defense if really needed...

Youre basing on one article. Have you studied the fa-50?
Again and again and again. ITS A LIFT!!!!! No one in their right mind will buy a LIFT aircraft for the purpose of going against air superiority fighters.. Its true purpose is to train. To return the PAF to the supersonic fighter age. Not to go toe to toe with Chinese aircrafts.

Again and again and again. ITS A LIFT!!!!! No one in their right mind will buy a LIFT aircraft for the purpose of going against air superiority fighters.. Its true purpose is to train. To return the PAF to the supersonic fighter age. Not to go toe to toe with Chinese aircrafts.
Again, the FA-50 is meant to counter China because it will be used as an interim fighter against that country. If not, then what other opponent did you have in mind?

Do you even understand the meaning of the word "interim"? It means "temporary". Sa tagalog "pansamantala". And it will be used as such only because we dont have any other choice. Its the only "fighter" we have right now. So even if it was not intended to be used as a primary fighter aircraft, when shit hits the pan, what choice do we have?
It was never meant as a counter to anyone. Again its first and foremost a LIFT.. The ability to go toe to toe with other nations MRF were never part of the aquisition requirements. In fact, the original plan was for the ta-50 (fa-50 is only an upgraded ta-50). And if you would only take time and study the fa-50, you'll understand how big a disadvantage it will have if pitted against a true MRF. As I've said, no one in their right mind will choose to buy such an aircraft if the goal is to "counter" other nations.
Its purpose is to train. To return the PAF to the fighter age. To prepare the PAF and stablish a pool of qualified pilots for future acquisition of "real" mrf that can really fight..
I will repeat again, it was never meant to fight anyone. Why else do you think they are based in subic/clark and not in puerto princesa where they can better patrol and protect the WPS and are more likely to encounter the chinese?

Part of countering China means getting ready to use fighters that will be purchased in the future. Otherwise, the aircraft are meant to counter another threat.

But if the next administration will not support the AFP modernization, for the lack of any other choice then the fa-50 will be used as our primary fighter aircraft.

According to the military (see the article I shared earlier), they will be stationed at Subic facing the West Philippine Sea where there is Chinese military presence (see par. 7). The same military states in subsequent paragraphs that the aircraft will be used for both air-to-air combat and air-to-ground combat.
Given that, I doubt that the aircraft were purchased not to counter China, unless the country faces immediate threats involving aircraft from other nations. Of course, air-to-ground combat may involve local insurgencies, etc.
