Now the guy who thinks Manila is the Gate to Heaven wants to stop us from using our cars two days in a week. Sure, we are rather desperate about our worsening traffic situation. But the proposal is so stupid I am no longer surprised it came from him.

It shows that they are incapable of creative thinking at MMDA. The proposal is a sure fire plan to make traffic even worse. Folks will just do what they did when we adopted the number coding scheme… buy another car. I suspect the MMDA guys are getting a fat commission from the car dealers.

On the other hand, those of us who cannot afford to buy another car will just suffer quite a bit from the inconvenience. Proposals like this can be expected from guys who have exempted themselves from the ban because they use government issued cars.

The uproar over the two-day ban proposal was expectedly loud and angry. Actually, if they had been using what little brain function they still have, they would have taken pains to first show that they have done all they can do and this drastic option is the only one left.

But everyone knows that there is still a lot more the MMDA folks can do before they exact more suffering from our already suffering people. To paraphrase former President Clinton, it’s those half empty colorum buses, stupid!

Yes, the MMDA Chairman must first gather the balls to deal with all those undisciplined half empty buses plying EDSA. Not only do those buses clog the highway, their undisciplined way of driving slows down traffic too. I recall an LTFRB official once estimated that less than a third of those buses are needed on EDSA...or was it just a fifth?

The question is… why is MMDA Chairman Tolentino afraid to deal with the colorum buses? At least former MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando had the balls to deal with them. Unfortunately, Fernando didn’t get the support of LTFRB so that the problem can be dealt with once and for all.

The talk around town is that police generals and politicians and their mistresses are the operators of those colorum buses which explains why officials like Tolentino are afraid to tangle with them. Government will have a lot more credibility to ask for more sacrifices if they are seen to have enforced the law and taken those illegal buses out.


Perhaps they can go back to basic Economics for a solution to the buses problem. As I have been saying here, I think the bus fare is set too high so that even a very low load factor is profitable for them.

Maybe we can set the bus fare at the same level as the MRT and watch those illegal buses voluntarily take their units out. The legal ones should not complain because without the unfair competition, they get more passengers and do more trips with better traffic flow. 

If that is still insufficient, we can go and use Economic principles again. Because of the congestion, using EDSA now has a higher price and those who want to use it at certain hours of the day must be ready to pay that price.

This is not a new idea. Singapore and London among other big cities use this rush hour toll on vehicles as a means of making users think twice about their trip. Those who do not want to pay the toll can schedule their trip after rush hours. Those who cannot afford not to be on the road on rush hour must factor the additional cost.

People should be made to use their judgment through economic incentives and disincentives. We can still have that one day number coding and in addition, put in the rush hour toll. All cars must get a transponder so that no toll booths will be needed… as they do it in Singapore.

dumaan na ba kayo sa tapat ng mirriam college at ateneo?

lagi sinisisi bus...kahit tanggalin ninyo lahat ng bus sa edsa magtatrapik pa rin yan.

bus driver ka ba or bus conductor? or is a close relative or a boyfriend the conductor or driver? or operator perhaps? anyway, just a share..

in some cases, it is the buses. example, from quiapo to espana to quezon ave., those buses will cut you like crazy. the same goes along edsa, specially in north bound guadalupe (early evening to late evening), southbound boni to the entrance of ayala tunnel at daytime. what these buses do is use their size to cut the other cars all the way beyond the motorcycle lane then go back to the bus lane and stop just to get pass the other traffic causing bus who stoped between the bus lane and the private vehicle lane because bus b is loading and unloading passenger in bus stop a or c. also, on northbound just before the santolan flyover, these buses will load passengers and cut everyone off just to get on to the flyover. almost got into a fight with a bus driver with this one.

now, in other cases naman, it is the jeepneys who cause the traffic. along lacson near ust all the way to sm san lazaro, going to rizal ave through tayuman and along espana, these jeepney drivers turn the street into a parking lot or a station. and no matter how you push on your horns, its like they dont hear a thing.

cant admit the buses faults? but dont call the others idiots, idiot

i think what voyager meant was that the writer of the article is the idiot if he thinks its only the colorum bus's fault.

kung wala ng bus sa edsa luluwang, hindi na magsisiksikan ang mga sasakyan sa C5 para lang makaiwas sa edsa. domino effect na yan.

for some time excluding spirituality i will agree to Mcdo

it is not the buses the road itself cannot handle large volume of automobiles, cars, SUV, PUJ, etc

it is half empty buses because their customers choose to ride MRT and LRT than buses that's why it is half empty to avoid to much hassle

the only solution is tax all private vehicles registered in NCR by 50 percent this is done by UK and it is profitable to the goverment

I studied for almost 1 and half year in Manila before  I got sick e mas marami pa ng mga private cars kaysa sa bus

Eto common sense lang:

There are simply too many people in manila.
Mrt cabs are too small and few
Buses and jeeps are undisciplined. (Punta ka guadalupe ng normal working hours. Dun nagbabara mga bus)
Pinoy divers do not follow road rules and have a me first mentality.


Ultimate solution:

Develop the countryside and have more job opportunities there.
Be VERY strict in implementing road rules just like Subic.
Improve mrt. Add cabs and more lines.


Stop gap measures:
Add more roads
Taxes for private cars
Nastier color coding


Problem with the government is that they think too much about stop gap measures but do nothing with real solutions.

Simple lang naman po.

hindi lang drivers ang matitigas ang ulo, pati na rin commuters. they have the mentality na "bababa ako kung saan ko gusto".  "sasakay ako kung saan ko gusto" at "tatawid ako kahit saan".

sa Ayala Ave ko lang nakikitang sinusunod ang loading at unloading bay.

I definitely agree with voyager. No matter how undisciplined the bus drivers are, the issue here is the volume of the vehicles that populates Edsa. Meaning, yung private vehicles talaga. Gaya nga ng sabi ni voyager, try nyo munang ikutin ang Metro Manila bago sisihin ang mga bus.
Pansinin nyo rin every Sunday sa Edsa, kayod pa rin mga bus drivers sa pagpasada ng bus pero walang traffic. Bakit? Dahil wala gaanong bumibyaheng private vehicles.
Ang problem talaga is yung mga private vehicles, napakadami tapos iisa lang usually mga nakasakay, compare sa buses, na madaming nakikinabang.

Ang nakikita ko kasing solusyon para mawala or mabawasan man lang ang traffic:

1. Bigyan ng regular na sahod ang mga bus drivers at konduktor. Ito yung kasagutan sa problema dyan sa picture na naipost ni bobotnaman. Maiiwasan yung mga bus na magunahan at maggitgitan sa pasahero kung mayroon ngang regular na sahod ang mga drivers at konduktors, hindi yung bumabase sa boundary or komisyon sa binibyahe nila.

2. Paigtingin yung pagsunod sa Bus terminal scheme. Dapat lahat ng terminals mayroong MMDA officer at hulihin kaagad yung mga bus na nagbababa at nagsasakay sa hindi naman nila designated na terminal. Minsan sa pagpasok ko kasi, naaasar ako, sinasakyan ko Bus A para mabilis, puro flyover ang daan. Mayroon pa rin na lahat ng terminals binababaan at nagsasakay nga ng pasahero. Gaya nga din ng sabi ni pareng toblerone, sa Ayala nga lang nasusunod yung ganitong sistema ng tamang babaan at sakayan. At para mapaigting nga rin ang disiplina para dito, na sa #1 na rin yung kasagutan.

3. Bawasan ang private vehicles sa Edsa. Gaya nga ng nasabi ko, madaming nakikinabang sa bus, bakit mo tatanggalin or babawasan? Hindi kagaya ng private vehicles na iisa lang or dalawa ang nakasakay, iilan lang ang nakikinabang. Isipin na lang yung kapakanan ng madami. Hindi naman lahat sumasakay ng MRT or LRT dahil ang totoo mas hassle pang sumakay sa mga yun. Imagine mo, pipila ka ng pagkahaba-haba tapos makakasakay ka nga, makikipagsiksikan ka naman. Tapos pagdating na sa ibang stations, hindi na makasakay ang ibang pasahero dahil sa puno na. Hindi kagaya ng bus na pwede kang makapagpahinga or matulog, komportable kang nakaupo. Kapag pumapasok ako sa office sa Makati from Valenzuela, mas okay pa talaga ang bus dahil kahit na maaga ang gising ko at pagalis sa bahay, pwede mo namang bawiin yung tulog mo sa byahe sa bus.

Ewan ko na lang, para sa akin ito ang basic and simplest solution sa pagbawas ng traffic sa Edsa.

lagi kaseng sinisisi ang mga bus kaya lagi silang napupuna ayon sa psychology kung lagi mong binabanggit or sinasabi ang isang tsismis or idea na kahit di totoo  sa kalaunan nagiging katotohanan ito

ang isang bus kayang magsakay ng 50 na tao, ang isang kotse kayang magsakay ng 5 tao.
