"Prior to turn-over to the Philippine Navy, the ship was armed with a Mk.75 Oto Melara 76 mm Compact main gun, two Mk.38 M242 Bushmaster 25 mm chain gun at midships, and a Phalanx CIWS system aft.[7] The CIWS and chain guns were removed prior to its turn-over, with the Mk.75 gun remaining.[2]
The Philippine Navy purchased 2 new Mk. 38 mod 2 gun systems to install with the Ramon Alcaraz to replace the mounts removed by the US Coast Guard."

I don't get it, sabi ni Pnoy we are not an aggressive race, pero may show of power dito which says otherwise (hint: WARship)..  bakit ganito kaya trip nila na laging publicized ang mga ganitong bagay?

Being aggressive doesn't mean you shouldn't purchase weapons/vehicles/equipment, it just means you don't go to other countries' territories and start establishing your presence there.

Wag kang mag alala, wala pa tayong kakayahan para maging aggressive kahit gustuhin natin ito, kulang pa yung resources natin para maging agresibo.

Well, from our point of view syempre alam nating walang balak makipagaway ang pinas, pero how about from an outsider's POV? lalo na at kasing close-cultured ng Chinese?

what I'm saying is , the timing for this is not in line with the statement we want to make, why not earlier on nung may threats pa sa tubbataha way back? or under a veil of secrecy? bakit kelangang nakabroadcast talaga? nakaka incite ito ng speculations within and outside the country..

nagkakalat nga ang gobyerno ngayo when it comes to military capabilities upgrade.  malaking dagok ang bagong pasang gun law which specifically states that one can only legally own up to 50 bullets per firearm.  the government should realize that an organized and disciplined armed citizenry will be a big boost to our nation's warfare capabilities.  switzerland's model is such a good thing to follow.  likewise US' national guard can be tapped if and when there is a need for such.  ganun din dapat ang gawin ng bansa natin, to strengthen its base force.  its military's number will always be limited but there are other untapped potentials.  if and when the worst happens, the citizens will arms themselves to protect their family, in a small scale, and its country, in a larger scale.

What speculations? That we will go to war against China? Alam ng China ang hardware ng bansa natin, in the same manner that we also know what they are capable of. There is no point in keeping this as a secret acquisition. To be blunt about it, this is all part of the psychological warfare versus China, not just by our country but by the US as well. Haven't you noticed how many ships and subs the US have sent to our country for "port calls?"  ;D

This acquisition together with other planned modernization(or upgrade) for the AFP is a must. This is a deterrent for future incidents which may happen within our territory. Again, kelan tayo bibili ng gamit for our military? Saka na? The best time is now, nakakapag modernize ka na ng military, naipaparating mo pa sa ibang bansa na when push comes to shove, we can also fight back, kahit na bread knife lang ang gamit panlaban sa baril.

Also, how would you acquire a ship that huge from the US under a veil of secrecy? And so what if the whole world knows we are modernizing our armed forces, this should have happened a long time ago. In a way, this is our country telling the bullies and would be aggressors that we will not back down from a fight if ever we are pushed towards that option.

Nakakatakot kalabanin ang China dahil sa hardware nila pero screw their POVs and how they will react regarding these purchases of our military.

I haven't read the new gun law pero tingin ko mas inuuna nila yung pag upgrade ng military hardware versus arming the citizenry. And I think even before, the government has failed to link the general public with the issue of protecting the country in case of a war or an invasion. That just shows that arming the public is the least of their concern. And this indeed could be a costly mistake in the event of an invasion in our country. Pro-gun groups should try to lobby an amendment for this law.

that new gun law law is a big BULLCRAP if you'd ask me.  tama yung license the gun holder just like how we license our drivers.  however, they failed miserably when they peg the maximum rounds to 50 per firearm.  9mm, 5.56 saka 7.62 ang mahaba ko.  if id have my way, mas ginusto ko na lang na chambered for same caliber para at least 150 rounds ang meron ako.  oh well, imbag na lang sa SH.

as to arming the citizenry, baka naman kasi magulat ang karamihan sa statement na yun.  however, if you'd think of it, it will be a very economical and cost-effective "military-capability upgrade".  ilan ba ang citizens to police ratio?  it is pegged at 500 to as high as 5000 per policeman in a given locality.  mas may effect nga ang "vigilant" or "aware" citizens kaysa sa magdagdag ka ng isang pulis sa isang lugar.  eh papaano pa kaya pag ratio ng civilian vis-a-vis soldiers ang pag-uusapan?

If this is indeed psychological warfare, I am worried how it will turn out dahil wala naman tayo sa lugar sa ngayon na maghamon pa ng laban lalo na at alam naman nating (realistically) wala tayong kalaban laban sa mga intsik sa ngayon.

Also, this thing about the US helping, andito yung sabi ni Hillary Clinton nung humingi tayo ng tulong:

http://globalnation.inquirer.net/77335/expert-says-philippines-cant-rely-on-us-vs-china

I think what the US is doing (as usual), is forming superficial ties solely for the money, di natin sila matatawag pag nagumpisa na ang laban, not when a large chunk of the US market makes use of China.

yup it's psychological warfare

these are second hand armaments e mag-kamikaze lang ang 5-10 pirated F-35 ng china lubog na yan or bangain lang yan ng Varyag aircraft carrier nila

but we have responsibility to protect our waters against pirates not against sovereignty of china or vietnam or malaysia or cambodia or thailand or singapore but against pirates having these second hand ships can boost our defensive capabilities and aggressiveness towards pirates or smugglers or traffickers

having these doesn't mean we go to war, having these cargo ships or cruise ships or tankers will feel secure

Hindi paghahamon yung goal ng psywar na yan, it actually keeps the attitude of the Chinese in check (Chinese in check, get it   laffman:: ) just in case they get any wild ideas of making audacious actions in our territory.

Nadadaan din naman sila sa sindak based on a previous occasion...
“It started, actually, in March 2011 when a Chinese patrol ship challenged MV Veritas Voyager conducting a survey for Forum Energy, 85 nautical miles off Palawan,” he said, referring to an incident at the Reed Bank in the Spratly Islands.

Defense and military officials said two Chinese ships harassed the Department of Energy-commissioned survey ship. The Chinese ships told the crew of the Filipino ship to cease their activities because that was part of Chinese territory.

The Chinese vessels left when the AFP Western Command, based in Puerto Princesa City, promptly dispatched a Navy BN-2 Islander maritime patrol aircraft and an Air Force OV-10 light attack/reconnaissance aircraft. No armed confrontation was reported.

And the fear about the US not helping the Philippines(although may treaty talaga tayo with the US) is another legitimate reason to upgrade and modernize our military ASAP.
