The Philippine national men’s basketball team joined Argentina, Croatia, Greece, Puerto Rico, and Senegal in Group C in the FIBA Basketball World Cup after the tournament draw early Tuesday morning.
 
Gilas will play its preliminary round games at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes San Pablo in Seville, one of four Spanish cities to host the first round of the tournament.

Group A matches will be played in Granada, Group C in Bilbao, and Group D in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.
 
The Philippines, making its return in the world stage for the first time in four decades, will have to place in the top four of the group to qualify for the knockout stages. In the quarterfinals, it will be go up against qualifiers from Group A, which is composed of Brazil, Egypt, France, Iran, Spain, and Serbia.
 
The round-of-16 and the quarterfinals will be played in Barcelona and Madrid, while the semifinals, the battle for third, and the finals will be played in the Spanish capital.

The Philippines only needs to beat two teams to advance to the next round.  Argentina, of course, is almost impossible with our current skill level.

Senegal, however, is beatable.  Their players are only athletic.  Senegal plays like Qatar pre-2012, where the latter country was bannered by 5 quasi-Quataris, who many claim are actually Africans.  A good system that is designed to dictate the tempo of the game can bring them down.

In my opinion, Puerto Rico, despite its abundance of NBA players, is realistically beatable.  Just put Arwind Santos in the team and wait for the eventual Renaldo Balkman meltdown redux.    Seriously though, Puerto Rico lacks organization.  Some pressure here and there and we might be able to steal one.

Croatia... I don't think we can beat them with the way they played last year.

Greece, on the other hand, has been very, very inconsistent.  Despite their high FIBA ranking, they suffered humiliating defeats to teams they were supposed to beat.  They defeated Spain, but lost to Croatia, Slovenia and - surprise surprise - Finland.  Who knows, baka makasilat tayo.

Our biggest advantage is our underdog status.  Teams tend to take it easy on opponents they know they can beat.  But we're not that bad in basketball.  If they rest on their laurels, we will capitalize on their lapses.

GILAS Pilipinas will open its Fiba World Cup bid against Croatia on August 31 in Group B action to be held in Seville, Spain, kicking off a campaign that will see the nationals playing five games over six days.

The Philippine team's match against the Croats will mark the country’s return to basketball’s biggest stage after 38 years, or since 1978 when the country hosted the event and placed eighth.

National head coach Chot Reyes, who announced Gilas’ schedule on his Twitter account, sees a tough schedule for a team that punched its World Cup ticket by placing second to Iran in the Fiba-Asia championships.

Reyes is bracing for a formidable challenge from Croatia, which finished third in the Eurobasket competition last year behind champion France and Lithuania.

“Pero di tayo patitinag. Lalaban ng patayan,” Reyes tweeted.

The nationals next face one of the four wild card entries in Greece on September 1 before a game against world No. 3 Argentina on September 2 where Indiana Pacers forward Luis Scola could possibly see action.

The Philippines takes a day off on September 3 before clashing with Puerto Rico on September 4 in a possible match-up with former Petron import Renaldo Balkman, who was banned for life by the PBA due to an infamous choking incident with teammate Arwind Santos.

The Filipino cagers wrap up the Group B preliminaries against Africa’s bronze medalist Senegal on September 5.
