AFP, NBI take more measures vs ‘plot’ to spring Andal Jr.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have taken added countermeasures to thwart a possible attempt to spring a member of the Ampatuan clan detained in Manila for the November 23 Maguindanao massacre.

On Friday, military information chief Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr. cited persistent information of a plot to attack the NBI headquarters in Manila to free Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr.

"Marami tayong natanggap na info na ganyan. Kaya ang NBI nagtalaga ng mas maraming gwardya at pina-igting natin ang info gathering (We continueto receive information of a plot to spring the mayor. That is why the NBI has beefed up security while we intensified our information-gathering)," Brawner said in an interview on dwIZ radio.

The NBI already beefed security in its premises, disallowing parking in front of its compound along Taft Avenue and placing added armed sentries there.

This came after a mysterious SUV parked nearby the NBI premises yielded firearms and a grenade after a search by authorities on Tuesday night. [See: Security at NBI tightened after mystery SUV yields firearms, grenade]

Rescue ops?

Brawner said they are also preparing for the possibility that the attempt to free Ampatuan may take place soon, to preempt the possibility of a court order for his transfer to Quezon City.

Andal Jr. faces murder charges for the killing of 57 people, including at least 30 journalists, in Ampatuan town in Maguindanao last Nov. 23.

Last Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted a request by the Department of Justice to transfer the case against Mayor Ampatuan to Quezon City. [See: SC grants DOJ plea to transfer hearing of Andal Jr's case to QC]

Brawner said they are already drawing up plans to secure the mayor, including arrangements for his transport, if the court eventually orders his transfer to Quezon City from the NBI.

"Di natin alam sa ngayon (We don’t know that for now)," he said when asked if Andal would be transferred.

Andal Jr. is not the only member of the powerful Ampatuan clan under custody for in relation to the November 23 massacre.

The clan's patriarch, Andal Sr., ARMM Governor Zaldy Ampatuan and several others are also in government custody facing rebellion charges following their arrest when martial law was imposed over Maguindanao province last week. - RSJ, GMANews.TV

have you seen how Andal was hit by a camera lens?  ang tindi ng precautions to secure him pero may nakalapit sa kanya "para saktan" (intentional) OR "at nasaktan" nga siya.  i mean, see the elaborate plan, armored vehicle, bullet-resistant vest (to be politically-correct, hindi daw kasi bullet-proof vest ang dapat na itawag) for Andal as well as his escorts. ung isa pa nga niyang escort naka Beta-C 100 round magazine.  tapos may makakalusot para ganun ang mangyari kay Andal.  they should have cordoned the venue such that wala makakalapit ng ganun-ganun lng kay Andal.
