Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) announced Tuesday that it will launch later this year what it claims to be the most advanced broadband delivery platform.

Called Fiber to the Home (FTTH), PLDT said the new service will be able to deliver voice, video, and data services simultaneously at much higher speeds and larger capacities than digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable technologies.

Instead of copper, PLDT said FTTH uses fiber optic technology to transmit data via light signals through hair-thin strands of pure glass.

Initial tests done by PLDT showed that a FTTH-enabled computer posted download speeds of up to 94.86 megabits per second (mbps) and upload rates of 69.39 mbps.

"At those speeds, it would take only one second to download a 5-mb mp3 file, 3 seconds for a 35-mb video clip and only one minute to download an 800-mb movie," PLDT network head Rolando PeÃ±a said in a statement.

last year pa to, nag testing sila sa mga selected subdivisions like forbes in makati. kahit man malaunch nila to this year, mga ilang taon pa hihintayin natin bago natin maexperience ang fiber optic. malaking gastos to on the part of the telco, so malamang hindi rin mura ang subscription nito

maganda sana ito kaso piling lugar palang merong fiber. sana all over the philippines magkaroon na nag fiber sa PLDT.

Huh! Fiber technology with copper terms and conditions....!!! should i pay 20,000 pesos when in fact you are binding yourself to a condition that the minimum broadband rate can fall to 150kbps??....would it be better if pldt can commit to the broadband rate it is offering??

Fiber Technology din dito gamit sa Canada here in Toronto it was use by Bell malaking company dito sa Toronto tulad din ng Smart dyan sa Pinas. Mabilis as in at tsaka cable mo, home phone and internet iisa na lang using Fiber.. I'm using it mga ka espiya..

duda ko matatagalan ma-implement/offer ito.
my opinion, sa dami ng lugar sa pinas na wala pang DSL kahit may phone lines na doon ang PLDT at globe, malamang matagalan itong fiber optics.

actually matagal ng gumagamit ng fiber optics and pldt. in most places, copper is only used from the home to the cabinet. From there, its fiber all the way. What they are offering is what they used to call fiber to home, where copper is no longer used.

of course, they can offer the higher speeds with their current set-up. but to make the new technology spread, they're only offering it on the new set-up.

Alam ko matagal na to, dito kasi sa company namin matagal na kaming gumagamit ng PLDT I-Gate as corporate account which is fiber optic connection from PLDT.

kaya pala bumagal ang net namin ha ha ahahha utak ng PLDT

fiber optic pa silang nalalaman e pagkamahal naman 20k 4 months na sahod ng isang maralitang mangagagwa

matagal na fiber optic 1990's pa existing na fiber optics kaso lang mahal ang installation
