Ford reveals all-new, 6th-generation Mustang

As Ford celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Mustang in 2014, the American carmaker is now presenting the all-new, sixth-generation model "around the globe in six cities on four continents."

"The Ford Mustang inspires passion like no other car," said Ford group vice president for global product development Raj Nair. "The visceral look, sound and performance of the Mustang resonate with people, even if they've never driven one. The Mustang is definitely more than just a car--it is the heart and soul of Ford."

Available as a fastback and as a convertible, the all-new Mustang retains key design elements like the long sculpted hood and the short rear deck while projecting a lower and wider stance due to its reduced height and wider fenders and track. While the front fascia has a contemporary execution of the Mustang's signature trapezoidal grille, the car's rear is dominated by the three-dimensional, tri-bar taillights and integrated sequential turn signals.

For the powertrain choices, the Mustang's upgraded 300hp 3.7-liter V6 and 420hp 5.0-liter V8 engines are now joined by an all-new 305hp 2.3-liter EcoBoost mill mated to either an updated manual gearbox or a reworked automatic transmission that features new steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

To handle the prodigious amount of power that all three engines put out, the all-new Mustang now rides on a new double-ball-joint front MacPherson strut system that enables the use of larger, more powerful brakes, and an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension--both tuned for high-performance applications. In addition, new aluminum rear knuckles supposedly help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling.

Some of the new features the all-new Mustang will sport are blind-spot monitoring and launch control systems, adaptive cruise control, heated and cooled seats, and tire-pressure monitoring "so you’ll be able to see your tire-pressure in each of the corners" (reportedly a first for Ford).

"From day one, we knew if we were going to build a new Mustang, we had to do it right,” said Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak. "We built a new Mustang from the ground up, one that is quicker, better-looking, more refined and more efficient, without losing any of the raw appeal that people have associated with the car for half a century."

The all-new, sixth-generation Ford Mustang will go into production in late 2014.

The shortened rear end makes it look...oddly Japanese.
