Following a heartfelt complain by a former workmate about having heard this phrase, I could not help but write this in defense. Yes I am a Law graduate, and yes I have worked in the call center industry during my days thinking that this phrase meant that call center is as menial as they say it is... but you know what....

This phrase pisses me off a lot. Why? There is such a huge discrimination when one hears a person is working in a call center. Companies even have specific rules for application for loan, credit card, phone line and so many other things if you are working in a call center, and if you say call center, you can hear the aah of disappointment in their tones.

Sad thing is, do these people actually know how freaking hard it is to get in a call center from the initial interview up to training even on the production floor? Yes they do see the glamour of call center workers partying, starbucks or going out having a good time, but they deserve it, because these people slave 8-9hrs or more a day bearing insults from clients who are not even their own family, constant changes with stats that they have to meet up with and the worry that anytime one minor fault can lose them their job. Believe me this work is not just about sitting down and saying hi and hello and its all good.

Carrying of phone is strictly prohibited in the production and yet you will get some ignorant love ones requesting to break up or even blame you for not answering the phone during your work hours. Do they even know carrying a phone inside the production floow is a cause for termination? Yes believe it or not it is! Inspite of being regularized these people still do not have stability of work, with the constant change of client requirements and statistics, quality control and metrics a call center agent can lose his job at anytime! Being late can be cause for termination, even being absent if its 3 consecutive days is ground for termination. And regardless of the emergency it is a requirement for an agent to phone in 2hr before his/her shift to inform that they can't make it, otherwise it is marked as No call, no show which can also lead to grounds for termination, now consider this what if an emergency struck and you are unable to call? Yes they do get penalized regardless. They work graveyard shift and believe me working in the night is one of the most difficult thing to do only to go home and sleep the day off to wake up and prepare again to go to work. Holidays, even Christmas and New Year they are required to go to work, regardless of any holidays celebrated. Its funny how the media always potray the glamour of working in a call center, but the true call center work takes a lot of hard work, sweat, blood and tears which the media have never gotten the chance to really show to the public.

In summary? Respect! This is not a simple job, otherwise they would not offer such a high pay, it takes a lot of sacrifice and yet it is classified by our system as a factory worker category, such a shame. No job deserves more respect than the hardworking call center agents who slave everynight to support their family because our government could not offer a job that suits their profession. For those who uses the phrase "call center lang pla nagwowork" I challenge you to try and enter this profession and after 2 or 3 months, tell me the same phrase that you mentioned and I promise you, you will change your perception!

naranasan ko rin yan, medyo mababa tingin sa call center kahit dito sa trabaho ko ngayon sa Telco kapag sinsabi ko dati ko work ay call center Agent meron parang pangmamaliit na tingin kasi brain dead ang tingin nila sa mga tao. Though sakin din naman okei lang maging agent pero parang maging part lang siya ng buhay mo at hindi career. Sabi rin sakin ng kaibigan ko kasi ate niya nagwowork dati as HR ng Accenture, minus points kapag nalaman na nagwork ka as call center agent which I think parehas sa lahat mga malalaking company

Ewan ko ba meron talagang ugali ang Pinoy na namimintas regarding sa work ng kapwa.

Sa experienced ko dito sa UK kahit ano work mo wala silang pakialam.  Hindi big deal pagdating sa ganyang issue as long you dont hurt anybody and you do your part.  Kanya2x po ng linya sa buhay at obligation sa society.

Ang dami kasing mayayabang na nagtatrabaho sa call center.. Did you know back in the day mga 2007 ata, pagka graduate ko sa college andaming nag apply sa call centers.. Marami rami rin ang natanggap kasi nga hired agad after graduate, anyayabang pa.. Just my experience.. But i totally respect anyones job kahit pag ppsp pa ang source ng income. We do what we must to get by..

I have been in this industry for half a decade for one reason:PERA...COMPENSATION..yun lang .I am very thankful and will always be indebted for my current company dahil nakatulong ito ng malaki noong nagsisismula pa lang ako na magpamilya. Still I am consistently searching for better opportunities outside this INDUSTRY and outside the COUNTRY.I don't think this is a long term career option.

I have been in several industries (FMCG,Sales,Medical) and modesty aside I have held positions in my previous companies so I believe kahit paano may batayan na ako sa pagkumapara sa mga ito vis-a-vis sa kalakaran sa Call Center.In my humble opinion yung mga empleyado rin naman ang dahilan bakit mababa ang tinging ng tao sa labas ng industriya natin.Maski noong wala pa ko sa Call Center naiirita ako kapag nagiinglesan kahit sa dyip at sa mall tapos baluktot naman ang pananalita.Dito rin ako nakakakita ng pinakamagulong standard ng promotion at hindi lang ito sa iisang kumpanya, nakaaapat na ako,pareprehas lang na MAS LAMANG ANG PALAKASAN KAYSA HUSAY NG TRABAHO.Want to get promoted?Smoke:)...or worse drink or sleep your way to the top.

Don't get me wrong.I also know a lot of good people here.Mga working students,single parents,mga di puwede mag abroad dahil sa pamilya na natutulungan ng call center.Isa ako dun and for this I am thankful .

karamihan pa mahilig sa pasosyal tapos medyo mababa ang moralidad, base sa experience at nakikita ko to kaya di mo rin masisi bakit mababa tingin nila sa mga Call Center pero salary wise mas malaki kumita sa call center. plus ego na rin na kapag nakagraduate ka dapat gamitn mo ang skills mo sa field mo or unlesss na lang medyo mahina ka

with all due respect.. at least ma-ipagmamalaki nila ang malaking sahod at american accent nila.... :/  but there must be a reason why most people have this perception towards call center agents. these reasons being valid or not,  no need to whine about it, no point in doing so.. unless one feels that they ought to be treated differently because they may be thinking that they are better than the rest of us, which i am sure that they are not...

gusto ko lang siguro sabihin, di lang naman call center agents ang nakaka-experience ng degradation o demeaning treatment ng dahil sa work..

relax lang tayo.

i think the writer wants to say ... Call Center Agent is a JOB.

Call Center Agent is a customer service job, pareho ng mga nasa concierge or front desk or housekeepers sa hotels. They work on shift basis. At kung complaints din lang, matindi ang nasa frontlines ng hotels kasi harapan kung mumurahin ka. So dapat wala clasification, let it be na This is a Job.

plus, tama rin na hindi talaga dapat minamaliit.

no disrespect pero bakit parang ayaw minamaliit ng author yung trabaho nya, pero sya naman ang nangmaliit sa trabaho sa factory. lol.

sa ibang bansa kasi ang mga call center workers ay yung mga estudyanteng katatapos lang ng highschool.

pero kung ako maofferan ng call center job sa pinas, langya tatanggapin ko na. laki kaya ng sweldo dyan. kahit lait laitin ikaw pa rin ang tumatawa papunta sa banko kasama ng limpak limpak na perang sinahod mo sa "call center agent lang" na work.

Kelangan magingles mga call center agents kahit nasa labas ng opisina kasi un ang tip ng trainer nila para mahasa sila sa ingles. Syempre un ang tool nila. Kaya pagnakakakita kayo ng mali maling magingles sa kalsada at feel na feel magsalita isipin nyo na lang na matatanggal sya sa trabaho pag di sya nagpractice.

Kapag hindi na nya minamaliit yung mga factory worker, saka na lang ako maniniwala sa "ipinaglalaban" nya.

Naging agent din ako, I know where he is coming from but the guy needs to learn to respect other jobs too. Lahat yan kumikita ng malinis na pera mapa-call center agent o factory worker, why be ashamed of being in the same category as the latter.

Live and let live...even someone who is selling fishball in a sidewalk should not be judged by saying fishball cart lang pala work nya, for all you know the guy might have sent his kids thru college, comes home after only 5 hours work q.time na and then satisfies his wife every single day. To each his own.

wag na lang siguro dapat i generalize ang mga call center agents. .
pero hindi naman natin maikakaila na may mga pasosyal nga na parang ewan na call center agents, mostly homos na nakakapiss off talaga makatingin kung minsan sarap dunggulin sa muka.
dipende na lang sa situation and sa tao.

we should never demoralize anyone by their work or financial status in life. .i know the feeling because i've been there. .pushing garbage trolleys and stuffs much worse than being a call center but i never felt demoralized.

Basta taxpayer...basta me ITR, bayani ng bayan, period. Ang kasambahay below minimum yan kaya tax exempt, bayani pa rin yan. Ang importante naghahanapbuhay ng marangal. Walang karapatan kahit sino ang manliit sa trabaho ng iba. Mabuti pang maliitin mo ung mga walang trabaho na nanlalamang o kaya yung ang trabaho eh maging palamon ng bayan. Mga taong kumikita sa pamamagitan ng pananamantala sa kapwa tao. Mga iskwater na walang bayad sa upa, kuryente, tubig tapos sila pa na nagrereklamong dapat palamunin sila ng bayan. Mga punyetang professional iskwaters na me kapal pa ng muka magpa upa sa tinitirikan nilang hindi naman kanila. Yung mga nagpapataya ng huweteng. Yung mga nagpapabayd sa boto. Yan ang laitin mo TS, wag ang factory workers na tinuturing mong mababa ayon sa standards mo.

Pasensiyahan na lang sa matatamaan, honest opinion lang...

Sa trabaho ko, nakakasalamuha ko lahat ng klase ng tao -  from foreigner to tycoon to middle class to lower class, professionals, tambay, skwater, ofw's and so on... Lagi akong may nakahandang approach sa bawat isa...

Pero kapag Call Center Agent ang kahaharapin ko laging  ::redalert... Iba kase ang arte nila eh, parang impromptu di naman maarte bigla na lang nag-inarte... At ang mas matindi pa, kung sino pa yong panget (ang sama ko lol) or tibo or bakla sila pa ang OA sa pag-iinarte...

Though, I salute all folks working in BPO Industry, one reason kung bakit maganda itinatakbo ng economy ngayon.

Maririnig mo lang naman ang katagang "___your work__ lang pala" kapag sobra-sobra na ang pang-mamata or pag-iinarte na ginagawa mo..
 
Wag na lang maging SENSITIVE, sa lahat ng trabaho kelangan ng KAPAL NG MUKHA...

Tama ka dyan sir. I almost lost my job dahil sa isang reklamadorang baklang call center agent. At inakusahan pa akong iba ang treatment sa kanya dahil call center agent lang daw siya na naka health card lang daw.

Mga bakla nga naman talaga.  >:(

though di ako call center pero kabilang pa rin ako sa bpo industry,,, mahirap ang trabaho... 8-12 hours a day minsan abutin ka pa ng 24 hours sa opisina.... regular nga pero di pa rin sasapat ang kita... tapos pagdating mo dito sa bahay, kala mo walking atm ka.. hehehe...

but still, masaya ako na may trabaho ako.. naiisip ko nga mas marangal pa kesa sa mga trapong kongresman at pa-ride sa pangalan ng kamag-anak sa pulitika...

nakakatulong ako sa family ko and sa ekonomiya ng bansa natin dahil sa tama (at labis.. heheh joke lang) na pagbabayad ng tax.... may eyebags man ako at paminsang sundot sa "starbucks", masaya naman ang parents ko sa payday ko....

I like this article a lot. :D

Call center agent din ako but I'm a teacher by profession. Certain circumstances lead me to this industry and it has been a very helpful move in terms of financial compensation, but believe me, the stress that comes along with the job is overwhelming.

Totoo na sige maraming maarte na galing sa call center. Pero I just have to explain din na kapag 8 hours kang nasa telepono talking to English speaking customers, it just starts to rub on you.

Ang explanation kasi niyan ay alam na kasi namin ang pasikot sikot sa customer service. Kaya madalas nag-iinit ang ulo ng mga agents pag sila naman yung dapat nakakatanggap ng excellent customer service tapos hindi sila natrato ng tama or when the service they expected was not delivered on time or on the level they expected.

Alam ko the means doesn't justify the end. But I just have to say that not all call center agents are the same. Siguro naka-encounter lang kayo ng medyo maarte or nag-iinarte nga if that's how you want to label it.

But my point here is, the attitude has nothing to do with the occupation/profession/livelihood or their preferences. The attitude speaks for the person not the kind of work they're into or because they dress, think, and act like the other sex. At the end of the day, ang kausap niyo, tao pa rin. Tao na may mga pinagdadaanan at iba't ibang pinagdaanan. Do not judge people just because they can speak English with an accent or because they can afford Starbucks. Judge them base on their actions and the words they speak.


Ask this yourself: Have I never offended anyone in my life?


I'm sure we all have at one point. Touche.
