PH Air Force 2nd Airbus C-295 from Spain arrives in Clark
« on: September 18, 2015, 02:20:20 am »

MANILA, Philippines – The second of the 3 Spanish Airbus C-295 medium-lift aircraft for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) has arrived at Clark Air Field in Mabalacat City, Pampanga on Tuesday, this was confirmed a PAF official.

The aircraft with tail number 140 landed around 5:30 pm after departing from Spain on September 8. It was flown in by pilots from the Airbus Defense and Space (ADS).

The three Airbus C-295 medium-lift fixed-wing aircraft was acquired by the Philippine government from supplier Airbus Military in a P5.29-billion contract signed last year as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ongoing modernization program under the present administration.

The first unit was delivered last March 22, months ahead of the original delivery schedule of October 2015. The second unit, which was supposed to be handed over by February 2016, was also delivered five months early. The last unit is scheduled to arrive on June 2016 as per contract, but may also be delivered before the year ends.

The three C-295 will augment the current PAF fleet of three C-130 cargo planes and three Fokker planes used in transporting personnel and cargos.

Aside from transporting logistics across the country, the C-295 will also play a key role in PAF’s capability to respond to disasters and other military and humanitarian missions.

An equivalent of the Fokker F-27, the Airbus C-295 is a twin-turboprop aircraft capable of carrying nine tons or 71 soldiers and equipped with rear ramp door similar to that of the C-130s for easier access during loading and unloading.

PAF spokesman Col. Enrico Canaya said the aircraft will first undergo inspection and evaluation procedures at Clark before it will be flown to Villamor Airbase in Pasay City for the proper turnover.

The PAF had sent 6 pilots and 19 technical crew to Spain early this year for training in the aircraft’s operation and maintenance.
