Filipino died in Saudi flash flood
« on: November 20, 2013, 02:39:04 pm »
A 40-year-old Filipino truck driver was killed in a vehicular accident during the flash flood that hit the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh over the weekend, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

The truck driver, whose identity was not disclosed by the DFA, was with two other Filipinos when the accident occurred, but the two “escaped unscathed,” according to DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez.

“Our embassy is currently coordinating with the employer of the deceased and local authorities for the repatriation of his remains,” Hernandez told a press briefing.

Rare heavy rains struck Riyadh last Saturday, triggering flash floods in the entire capital and cutting off power supply in some areas.

A report on Gulf News on Tuesday said four people were killed while 10 others were missing due to flash floods sparked by torrential rains in Saudi Arabia. Two of the fatalities and seven of the missing were from Riyadh.

Hernandez said the Philippine Embassy and its temporary shelters for distressed Filipino workers were not flooded and are operating normally.

Unofficial estimates say Saudi Arabia is home to between 500,000 to 1.8 million Filipinos, working mostly in the service sectors. — Michaela del Callar/KBK, GMA News
