Pacquiao okays Cotto as next foe --Arum

MANILA, Philippines -- Impressed by the tremendous amount of fan support Miguel Cotto generated in his welterweight fight yesterday, Manny Pacquiao has given promoter Bob Arum the go signal to arrange a fight between the two stars.

Speaking to Michael Marley of The Examiner, Arum -- who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto -- said he already has penciled November 14 as the targeted date for the Pacquiao-Cotto showdown.

Pacquiao sat ringside with Arum as Cotto carved out a hard-fought split decision win over the tough Joshua Clottey to retain his WBO welterweight strap yesterday at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Puerto Rican fought on despite sustaining a deep gash in the left eyebrow.

"Manny told me what to do. Manny told me 'Go ahead, make that fight.' So it will go Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand here in (Las) Vegas," Arum told Marley. "He (Pacquiao) was impressed by Cotto's fan support and told me it reminded him of how the British fans stand with Ricky Hatton."

A proposed Pacquiao-Cotto bout became more likely after Floyd Mayweather -- one of Pacquiao's targeted opponents -- announced he is calling off his comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez because of a rib injury he sustained while training.

Mayweather is originally slated to face Marquez on July 18. With the injury, however, their fight is reportedly being rescheduled to September 19 -- making a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout unlikely to happen within the year.

Arum, meanwhile, assured that Cotto is enthusiastic with the prospect of a Pacquiao bout.

"Miguel is delighted to get a fight against Manny, trust me. Miguel very much wants this fight. It will be a sensational fight (with) the way they attack," Arum said. - By Dino Maragay (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

surely SG.it will last more than two rounds cause Cotto is better shape than Hatton..

agree ako dyan di pa kasi natin alam kung anong timbang sila mag- lalaban pero kung 147lbs div, yun naku po may pag lalagyan si pacquiao kay cotto, 147lbs ang tunay n timbang ni cotto...at totaly in good shape si cotto sa 147lbs di gaya ni dela hoya...

Bob Arum won't gamble the Man he called "Greatest Boxer of All time" and that is PacMan.
He doesn't want Pacquiao to fall into the right gloves. Kaya napili ni Arum na si Cotto ang magiging
kalaban ni Pacquiao. Maybe he saw something, what he saw with De la Hoya so as Hatton.



It's not about the fight, is not about the fighter, its all about bussiness.
Well, in the end... still Arum gets the lion share   ;D.

 Maybe in good shape, but still speed is the key! and Manny have the speed and power.

this could be Pacman's last fight before  he runs for May 10 election as Saranggani congressman. Novermber ang target date for the fight & if he wins ( he will) magko concentrate na siya sa campaign. between dec 2009 - may 2010 alangan naman maisingit pa niya isang fight againts Mayweather. So i think Sotto will be his last b4 retiring.

this will be a true test for Pacman stepping in the welterweight...

si Cotto is not a push over guy...1 loss lang and very fast hand din, he can take a punch.. mabilis yung right hand niya
and he has a good chin! ( not against Margarito though)
so matinding laban to!!


my advice kay Pacman for Cotto is!
Mag pa kalbo siya or mag licealis! ;D

i think so rin na ito talaga ang laban na masusubukan si pacman kung siya ba talaga ang pound for pound champion. i think this is much better fight keysa kay mayweather kasi tatakbuhan lang naman ni mayweather si pacman hindi kagaya nito na talagang lalaban ng basagan ng mukha. hehehehe ;D ;D ;D

Yan Nanaman Ung Mga Umaasang Mananalo laban kay PaCMaN, Sayang lang yung mga ibabayad ng Manonood Jan, Hindi rin tatagal yung ganyang style ni Cotto.. Malamang wala pang round 5 tulog na yan:( Di nga Convincing Win pagkapanalo nya kay Clottey.. Kay Margarito pa nga lang wala na sya eh. kay Pacman pa Kaya. I much prefer kung si Mayweather or Marquez na lang para maganda ang laban.

I doubt it if the fight will be at 147lbs. I think at maximum it will be on 145lbs catch weight.

Mayweather just chickened out I guess like what he did in his retirement avoiding Margarito as an opponent.

I just hope that after this Cotto fight, 1 more fight at 140-145lbs againsts Marquez just to shut him up  toast::

Ang boxing laro ng suntukan hindi takbuhay, kung gusto natin makanood ng suntukan si cotto ang dapat, si floyd jr, kc takbo lang ng takbo, kaya lang naman gumanda ang laban ni paquiao kay marquez kasi agresibo si pacman, counter puncher si marquez kung di ka susugod si pacman di sya aatake,

nde ako talaga kumbinsido sa estilo ni Cotto base sa huling laban niya kay Clottey baka mas dapat si Moshley na lang kahit na may edad na at 36 yrs old mukhang warrior.

I wasn't exactly impressed with Cotto's win either. I think Clottey fought like an idiot, sa 4th o 3rd round ata un parang naglalaro lang si clottey, sangga lang ng sangga and it appeared to me like he was just toying with Cotto. Yun tuloy, nakabawi pa ng momentum si Cotto. Si Marquez pa rin siguro mas magandang last fight ni Manny. Isang last match na lang to settle the score once and for all.  toast::
