I know it was converted using smart movie (hence I mentioned compressed encoding).
And no, VLC player is NOT the only software that can play AVI files. AVI files are actually container files only, it can contain different kinds of encoding (i.e. smartmovie, divx, mp4, etc etc). And even the one using smartmovie encoding, there is more than one software that can play it besides VLC player (the accopanying smartmovie player software when you install it in your pc will also be able to play it) -- mplayer will also be able to play it. mplayer is similar to VLC but consumes less resources and smaller in size. BUT, not that easy to find since it was originally released for linux distro (there is a windows version though).
