Roberto del Rosario - Filipino Inventor



Roberto del Rosario is the president of the Trebel Music Corporation and the inventor of the Karaoke Sing Along System in 1975. Roberto del Rosario has patented more than twenty inventions making him one of the most prolific Filipino inventor. Besides his famous Karaoke Sing Along System Roberto del Rosario has also invented:
-Trebel Voice Color Code (VCC)
-piano tuner's guide
-piano keyboard stressing device
-voice color tape

Roberto del Rosario - Noted Patents:
-Patent No. UM-5269 dated 2 June 1983 for audio equipment and improved audio equipment commonly known as the sing-along system or karaoke
-Patent No. UM-6237 dated 14 November 1986 audio equipment and improved audio equipment commonly known as the sing-along system or karaoke

Roberto del Rosario - Karaoke Sing Along System: Karaoke is a Japanese expression for singing along to a famous record with the vocals removed. Roberto del Rosario described his sing-along system as a handy multi-purpose compact machine which incorporates an amplifier speaker, one or two tape mechanisms, optional tuner or radio and microphone mixer with features to enhance one's voice, such as the echo or reverb to stimulate an opera hall or a studio sound, with the whole system enclosed in one cabinet casing.

Pedro Flores was the first person to manufactured the yo-yo in the United States

The word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native language of the Philippines, and means 'come back.' In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a weapon for over 400 hundred years. Their version was large with sharp edges and studs and attached to thick twenty-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey. People in the United States started playing with the British bandalore or yo-yo in the 1860s.

It was not until the 1920s that Americans first heard the word yo-yo. Pedro Flores, a Philippine immigrant, began manufacturing a toy labeled with that name. Flores became the first person to mass-produce yo-yos, at his small toy factory located in California.

Duncan saw the toy, liked it, bought the rights from Flores in 1929 and then trademarked the name Yo-Yo.

Pedro Flores was born in Vintar Ilocos Norte, Philippines.

In 1915, Pedro Flores immigrated to the United State and later studied of law at the University of California Berkeley and the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.

Pedro Flores never completed his law degree and began his yo-yo business while working as a bellboy. In 1928, Flores started his Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara. James and Daniel Stone of Los Angeles financed machinery for the mass production of yo-yos.

On July 22, 1930, Pedro Flores trademark registered the name Flores Yo-Yo. Both his yo-yo factories and the trademark were later acquired by the Donald Duncan Yo-yo Company.


Akhil Madhani



Akhil Madhani Lemelson-MIT Award For Robotic Invention

a PhD graduate student of Mechanical Engineering from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab was honored on February 11, 1998 with the $30,000 Lemelson-MIT Award Student Prize for his robotic invention. Madhani invented a surgical device that would allow medical teams to perform operations inside the human body through a much smaller incision than was previously possible. By using a smaller incision, doctors can reduce trauma to a patient during surgery.

The 29-year-old inventor received the award and prize money for his Black Falcon teleoperated surgical instrument that operates by remote control and fiber optics. Madhani has five patents pending, and two of his inventions are already being used by NASA. The young inventor currently works for Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development in Glendale, California, on robotics, computer controlled systems and digital technologies.

The Black Falcon was inspired by Madhanis' father Dhanvant Madhani, an orthopedic surgeon, who allowed his son to watch him perform arthroscopic surgery. Akhil Madhani designed his teleoperation device to aid in coronary artery bypass surgery (an operation that involves the ribcage being split through the sternum and spread apart to expose the heart). His device may allow such surgery to be performed by inserting instruments gently between the ribs.


 

Angela Perez Baraquio, the 24-year-old Physical Education teacher who Miss America 2001, is a daughter of Philippine-born parents living in Hawaii. Her father, Claudio Fernandez Baraquio was born in Pangasinan, while her mother, Rigolette Perez grew up in Manila.

 Prior to winning the Miss America crown, Angela was chosen as the representative of the town of Leeward in the Miss Hawaii Scholarship Pageant, which was held last June 9. With a combination of beauty, intelligence, and talent, Angela won the Miss Hawaii pageant, thereby earning the slot for the prestigious national pageant. She showed her talent when she performed the exotic hula dance in front of the judges.

 She was also involved in numerous volunteer and charitable endeavors. She helps direct a Tongan youth choir that she helped co-found. She has served as assistant coach for the girls' basketball and cross-country teams at Moanalua High and Holy Family.

Currently, Angela is an exemplary teacher at the Holy Family Catholic Academy where she has been a forerunner in implementing Character Education for her students. Her goal is not only to teach academic essentials, but to also provide students invaluable life skills such as teamwork, mutual respect and appreciation of others.

 Angela, who won a cash prize of $50,000, pledged to devote her yearlong reign as this year's Miss USA to helping "kids become well-rounded individuals and contributing citizens" through character education. She plans to earn a Master's Degree in Educational Foundations and make a positive impact on the lives of the citizens of all nations.
