One of the IndyCar Series? brightest young drivers, Danica Patrick has blossomed into one of the country?s brightest sports stars. But Patrick, who was featured on the covers of Sports Illustrated, TV Guide and ESPN: The Magazine and was one of the most popular athletes of 2005, is anything but an overnight success.
Though she began racing only because younger sister Brooke wanted to race go-karts, Patrick won numerous karting titles. At age 16, she left home for England, where raced in some of the most difficult junior series in the world. The highlight was a runner-up finish in the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, England, the highest finish by an American in the event?s history. That result drew the attention of Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Rahal, who quickly signed her to a contract and began shepherding Patrick up the racing ladder.
Away from the track, Patrick, who married Paul Hospenthal in November 2005, enjoys shopping, watching movies, music and working out.
