there are two paths that mobile developers create their apps.

- Native
For iOS you need to learn Cocoa/Objective C (it's like C++), you need to download Xcode. You also need to have a mac to be able to develop in iOS
For Android you need to learn well, google android (a mixture of java and xml). You can download the bundled ADT (this includes eclipse and the necessary stuffs you need to develop in android, it also includes an emulator but be wary as it is very, very slow)

- HTML5 based
You can create apps based in HTML5 using a mobile framework you can see a list here
  http://www.markus-falk.com/mobile-frameworks-comparison-chart/

as you are a vb6, sas, sql developer you need to brush up with the current technology as you need to know the basics of OOP.

Happy coding!

Eclipse is an IDE, not a PL..

OT: kung android, or iOS follow sir drkalucard , sana nga lang serious VB6 applications dinedev mo prior to entering mobile app dev, para hindi ka mahirapan magshift, hindi kasi kasing spoonfeeding ng VB6 yung dalawang minention hehe.

what do you mean by "serious vb6 applications dinedev mo prior....."?
i'm working here sa bank. we provide client's wish as long as pwede sa vb6.
well right now hindi na ako focus sa VB6. nilipat ako sa SAS/sql team.

If you are willing to invest some, try GameMaker. They combine visual modeling with their own GameMaker Language. The IDE is free and you can download from Steam. With the free version you can start building apps which runs within the IDE. What they charge for are they're export modules. They have export modules to iOS, Android,  Windows, HTML5, etc. Medyo mature na rin ung community so if you run into some difficulty, marami nang helpful threads sa forum nilaand you can always post your own questions. May mga 3rd party dlls na rin from the community na helpful in some features na hindi pa supported. The good thing about using their tools is that you just have one code and you can deploy it to different OS platforms. Downside would be the cost of the export modules, but if you can cough out the dough for their Master Collection they provide all future export modules for free (since binili ko to some time back, nagkaroon na ng export module for Win 8 phone (dati 7 pa), Ubuntu and Tizen). The dev team has also been active in fixing bugs (in GameMaker, hindi sa app na dinedevelop mo) that crop up

Serious VB6, what I mean is actually dealing with code, unlike most people I've met who deal with VB6 from the drag and drop end

For example, dealing with memory management and low level coding, central idea yan para sa mobile dev na limited memory capacity at speed , resource optimization kumbaga, hindi halos nagagalaw yan pag vb6 ginagamit mo :D

another issue you might encounter is dealing with objects, mostly all of the new techs now are using OOP and without knowing the basic concepts of OOP mawiwindang ka once you used technologies which uses that ideology. I am also a VB6 developer and I'm still developing/maintaining apps which uses this legacy technology (the apps im dealing with are the ones connected to serial scanners for badge reading and reproduction). I think hindi minamaliit ni adonai ung capabilities mo pero kasi mobile development is a different thing. Napakalimited and resources ng isang mobile devices compared sa isang computer e.g type of processor (back in the days ARM processor lang, buti ngaun medyo lumkas lakas na), storage device, ram, etc.

Aside from that you need also to consider the backend that your app will use, and at least have technical knowhow on creating and consuming webservices.

btw if you guys have an android phone padownload naman ng app ko theBoracayApp, it's still in internal beta i need stats :) salamat
