Palace formally invites UN Rapporteur
« on: October 12, 2016, 06:07:13 am »

Malacañang announced Wednesday that it has already formally sent an invitation to the United Nations Special Rapporteur to investigate the alleged extrajudicial killings of drug suspects in the Philippines.”Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said the Palace has sent an invitation to the UN special rapporteur Agnes Callamard and he is awaiting her response,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella announced in a press briefing at the Palace.

In the invitation, Abella said the Palace also urged the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitration Executions to include in her investigation the number of policemen killed while pursuing drugs suspects.

”It is also an invitation urging the UN rapporteur to include in her invitation the killings of law enforcers and drug suspects so that she will obtain an accurate perspective of the drug problem in the country,” he said.

Last month, the UN Special Rapporteur reportedly called on Philippine authorities to “adopt with immediate effect the necessary measures to protect all persons from targeted killings and extrajudicial executions”.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs has so far led to the surrender of more than 700,000, the arrest of more than 22,000, the death of nearly 1,500 in legitimate police operations, and the seizure of PHP8 billion worth of shabu in the first three months of his administration.

Abella said the invitation does not include the United States and European Union, which have also expressed concern over the alleged drug-related summary killings.

According to media reports, more than 3,000 people have been killed by police and vigilantes in the Philippines as a result of the intensified campaign against narcotics. The country has reportedly nearly four million drug personalities. (PNA)

if it's the UN, how come the USA and EU is not represented... for the sake of transparency, why not invite all... the truth will always come out...

In my opinion, if the US can provide an answer to the killings of black americans in their country as well as EU can answer the massacre that is happening in the middle east maybe they will be invited..

In some sense, nag aagree ako dito. Pero dahil naniniwala ako na hindi magandang gawing judge kung may prior bias na ang bansa nila.

pero teka, di ba represented na ng UN lahat ng member countries? bat pa nga kailangan ng tawagin sila isa isa?

It is a totally different thing kasi yun sa america at killings sa atin.

USA and EU are part of UN.

yup... correct sir... but there is this statement in the report on the USA and the EU not part of the invited group... so that's why i was wondering how come they aren't part of that group.

Abella said the invitation does not include the United States and European Union, which have also expressed concern over the alleged drug-related summary killings.

Maybe because UN as a body, where Philippines is a member, has the authority to review occurrence of Extrajudicial Killings and provide its recommendations. Just like when Philip Alston conducted his review during Noynoy's Administration. Whereas, USA and EU have no right to send any representative to conduct investigation simply because we have our own sovereignty and the law of land governs.

Sa UN kasi meron treaty na nilagdaan ang Pilipinas about human rights na dapat as signatory sinusunod natin.
Kaya siguro ala US at eu sa dahil ala naman tayong treaty with them.

Correct! Philippines is a sovereign state kaya Digong felt insulted when US and EU are trying to meddle with our affairs. It's an insult to our laws and sovereignty as a nation na nakikialam sila. There is a proper procedure kung paano mag file ng complain sa UN pero these 1st world countries, paningin nila sa atin maliit kaya parang napaka dali lang sa kanila na mag judge sa atin which is wrong.. Kung di nila nirerespeto si Duterte as a person at least respect him as the President since he represents the Philippines as a nation.
