Echoing Senator Antonio Trillanes’ observation, Duterte never had an exhibit to prove that his 3-6 months promise of curbing crime and illegal drugs had worked sometime in Duterte’s more than twenty decades of ruling Davao City. Duterte has plenty of years to show the public that he actually did the “3-6 months and was successful”, but there was none. Davao today is still infested with crime and drug problems.
Forget about Numbeo’s “Davao as safest city in the world”. It turned out to be a farce, contributed by merely 470 individuals who could possibly Duterte’s fanatic supporters to prep his bid for presidency. Clearly, with Numbeo’s style of gathering data any place can be the safest (or with the prettiest ladies or whatever) for as long as you have the cult following. Read Numbeo’s Terms of Use page to see what that means.
One credible individual who had experience in working against the country’s crime and drug problem already gave his honest opinion. Senator Ping Lacson, who served as director general of the Philippine National Police for two years, said that it is impossible.
Lacson explained that massive police visibility is needed for criminals to think twice before committing their crime, but the 150,000 policemen across the country are not sufficient to man for 100 million citizens. Lacson also cited that a policeman cannot just kill criminals on the spot especially if the perpetrators surrendered. And when the due process starts, getting a conviction within a year is considered as almost a miracle.
These statements are real, logical, and reasonable from real persons.
Illegal drugs is a crime of addiction. Once a person is hooked, 3-6 months are not enough to shun drugs. There will be deep craving as though one is possessed by evil spirits, the person is not in control of himself. There will be demand. There will be suppliers. That “3-6 months” as impossibility is beyond reasonable doubt. Just look at Duterte’s Davao City.
If Duterte cannot stop his foul-cursing mouth in 3-6 months, if Duterte cannot stop his libido from kissing random women in public in 3-6 months, why will he expect illegal drug dependents to stop their addiction in 3-6 months?
You don’t need to be a rocket political analyst to figure that Duterte’s promise of curbing crime and drug problem for the whole Philippine archipelago within 3-6 months is not doable. Logic and common sense will tell you that it is impossible especially in a country where due process of law is being upheld.
Is Duterte’s promise doable? Answer: No.
Was the 3-6 months ever done in Davao? Never. Duterte’s fight against crime and illegal drugs in Davao City is relatively good, but not within his 3-6 months self-restriction. Even after his reign of more than two decades drug is still a big problem in Davao City.
