MAR ROXAS HANGS SELF
WITH DAVAO DRUGS CLAIM

Administration Presidential candidate Manuel Roxas III, already trailing in the surveys, placed himself in a tight spot, even possibly a legal bind, when he declared that he knows where to buy drugs in Davao City and in Makati. In an attempt to put Presidential frontrunner Rody Duterte, currently Mayor of Davao City, in a bad light, Roxas claimed in an interview that Davao City is not free from dangerous drugs and that he knew where to buy these. “May droga sa Davao ngayon. Ngayon lang, gusto mo samahan kita e, makakabili tayo ng droga sa Davao e,†Roxas told reporters.
Roxas' claim followed intelligence reports that the administration was planning to stage a "mock" drugs raid in Davao City called "The Great Raid" apparently to shame Duterte and refute his claim that he could stop the drugs trade in the country within six months.
In the same interview, Roxas also claimed that he knew where to buy drugs and even cocaine in Makati City, base of another Presidential candidate, Vice President Jejomar Binay. "I don't believe Mar Roxas understood the implications of his statement," said retired police colonel Patricio Piñol. The retired police officer said that since Roxas has just resigned as DILG Secretary, he should have done something about the alleged drugs syndicates in Davao City and Makati when he was in office. "Even now that he has resigned as DILG Secretary to run for President, Mar Roxas remains as one of President Aquino's most trusted men. Why did he not submit to the President his findings on the drugs operations in Davao City and Makati City?" he asked.
Lawyers who commented on the issue on the condition that their names are withheld said Roxas has placed himself in a legal bind. By publicly admitting that he knew where to buy drugs in Davao City and Makati City but deciding not to do something about it, Roxas is deemed guilty of the crime of omission. "As the President's trusted man, he could have confided this to President Aquino and police operations could have been conducted," a lawyer said.
Roxas, the lawyer said, has virtually hanged himself by making the "preposterous claim" that he knew where the drugs could be bought in Davao City and in Makati City. "He has virtually hanged himself and he made himself look foolish," said the lawyer.
Peter Laviña, Duterte's spokesman, described Roxas’ statements as “pathetic,†adding that the administration bet is showing he is not fit to be the next president of the county. “He did not only exhibit irresponsible citizenship by not reporting to authorities where drugs are being peddled, he has, in fact, become an accomplice in protecting drug lords and drug pushers,†Laviña said in a statement on Tuesday.
