MANILA, Philippines – Nielson G. Pangan from the University of the Philippines (UP) tops the 2013 Bar Examinations with a grade of 85.8%.
Pangan was ranked 96th in his batch at the UP College of Law, SC Spokesperson Theodore Te said.
The 27-year-old topnotcher is part of of the Migallos & Luna law firm and was planning to take up Masters in Business Administration if he didn't pass the examinations. He said he was "shocked" with the results.
UP got 5 out of the Top 10 slots of successful examinees. It is the first time since 2005 that the state university topped the bar.
A total of 1,174 aspiring lawyers passed the exams, comprising 22.18% of the examinees. The percentage of successful examinees is higher than the 17.76% who passed the 2012 exams, representing 949 out of a total 5,343 bar takers.
Since 2000, the highest percentage of passers was recorded in year 2001 with 32.98% of examinees passing the bar. At the time, 1,266 out of 3,849 examinees made it.
