Top 5 IT Skills in Demand for 2014

The top 5 IT skills in demand for 2014 have been revealed in a recent survey of over 1100 IT Hiring Managers by Technology Recruitment Specialists, Greythorn.

Half of those surveyed believed that the most valuable skill set for 2014 will be Cloud Computing, illustrating the continued importance this technology is now playing in the business arena.   Second on the list was Business Intelligence, followed by Project Management.

Business Analysis and Programming saw the biggest decreases in demand year on year. In 2013, 39% of Hiring Managers viewed Business Analysis as a top 5 skill, dropping to 29% in 2014, while Programming dropped from 32% to 22%, neither making the top 5 list at all for 2014.

The most notable change however were the two new entrants to the list - Big Data and Soft Skills, of which 30% of hiring managers viewed as key skills for IT professionals for 2014.

Richard Fischer, Managing Director for Greythorn Australia, commented: “Whilst many companies have been discussing Big Data strategies for a couple of years, the actual opportunities were slow to emerge.  We have now seen this change dramatically with a large volume of companies looking to hire candidates with Big Data skill sets across a full range of roles. As a result there is a substantial candidate shortage in this area and 2014 will see a significant amount of competitive demand for professionals with these skills.”
