‘Unang Hirit’ gets ‘grave and serious admonition’ from MTRCB for Arnold Clavio offense

The GMA morning show “Unang Hirit” has received a “grave and serious admonition” from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board for the disrespectful phone patch interview conducted last month by GMA anchor Arnold Clavio with the lawyer of controversial businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles.

In a resolution released by an MTRCB ad hoc committee on Wednesday, “Unang Hirit” was also meted a fine of P20,000 for Clavio’s “indecorous language and behavior” and ordered to undergo “a period of close collaboration of one month” with the MTRCB.

The ad hoc committee also required GMA Network executives and “the executive producer, director, writer, public affairs hosts, and especially Mr. Arnold Clavio of ‘Unang Hirit’” to undergo a mandatory seminar to be conducted by MTRCB chair Eugenio “Toto” Villareal, a law professor of law and media ethics, on December 10 and 11 at the MTRCB office.

The seminar will be about “media and the legal profession in the context of both audience sensitivity and the administration of justice”.

The committee acknowledged that GMA Network had submitted “a two-page letter containing its proposed remedial and restitutive measures, as well as the draft public statement for ‘Unang Hirit’”.

In its letter, GMA said it had “already taken steps to prevent similar missteps, primarily by reiterating the best practices of GMA News and Public Affairs”.

Two days after the interview, Clavio issued a brief statement in which he acknowledged that he had gone overboard and asked for understanding but stopped short of an apology.

The network has yet to publicly adress the November 5 episode of “Unang Hirit” in which Clavio rudely dismissed Atty. Alfredo Villamor, Napoles’ counsel on the illegal detention case filed against her by pork barrel scandal whistle-blower Benhur Luy.

Clavio lost his temper after pressing Villamor about the upcoming Senate hearing on the pork barrel scam even as the lawyer repeatedly replied that he was only representing Napoles in her illegal detention case.

The resolution was signed by the ad hoc comittee chairman Noel del Pardo, and committee members Carmen Musngi and Jose Romero.
