MANILA, Philippines – After Korina Sanchez, another ABS-CBN broadcaster is under fire for an ‘insensitive comment’ in a morning radio program, and this time it is Ted Failon.

Failon, a prominent and veteran TV/Radio broadcaster of ABS-CBN created another ‘bad press’ for his remark about a PAGASA employee who died in typhoon Yolanda onslaught in Leyte.

In his radio morning program Tuesday, Ted Failon allegedly said that “most PAGASA people are not aware of what a storm surge is”  because one of its employees died from a storm surge herself.

But the Philippine Weathermen Employees Association (PWEA), was quick to dismiss Failon’s claim and immediately issued a statement through its president Mr. Ramon Agustin. The statement blasted Failon’s irresponsible remarks and insisted that the PAGASA required, as a rule, its ‘personnel on duty should not leave or abandon post’ and that their colleague ‘died not in the comfort of her own home, but rather died in the service of our country.’

Here is the full statement issued by Philippine Weathermen Employees Association (PWEA):

“The PWEA honestly respects the opinion of Mr. Ted Failon aired early this morning that most PAGASA people are not aware of what a storm surge is. According to Mr. Failon, this is because one PAGASA personnel died as a victim of a storm surge herself.

However, we are deeply saddened by this comment. Please allow us to inform our kababayans (countrymen) that our colleague suffered the onslaught of Yolanda because she was on duty at the weather station. It is the general rule in PAGASA that personnel on duty should not leave or abandon their posts at all cost if a locality is under threat from a tropical cyclone. Our lady colleague died not in the comfort of her own home, but rather died while in the service of our country.”

Last week, another ABS-CBN news anchor, Ms. Korina Sanchez, wife of DILG sec. Mar Roxas came under heavy criticism from social media users for trying to refute CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper’s critical reporting of actual events at typhoon Yolanda’s ground zero in Tacloban City, most specifically regarding Cooper’s observation on the government’s seeming incompetence in addressing immediate needs of survivors.

Ted Failon has yet to issue a comment or a reply to PWEA’s statement as of this posting.
