Steam OS --- wait what?!
« on: September 23, 2013, 03:05:55 pm »

After a forever-long countdown to a three-tiered announcement, Valve has rolled out phase one of its plan to take over your living room: SteamOS.

What many thought was going to be a Steam Box console is for now in fact a Steam platform, one that will be available for hardware manufacturers to implement at will. Perhaps not surprisingly, the immediate focus is on gaming:

"Finally, you don’t have to give up your favorite games, your online friends, and all the Steam features you love just to play on the big screen. SteamOS, running on any living room machine, will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available."

What's not entirely clear right now is what a "living room machine" entails; presumably one of Valve's two remaining announcements this week will rotate around its own device, as well as those by third-party manufacturers like last year's Piston Steam Box. Valve's remaining announcements will take place this Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Why the need for SteamOS? Valve honcho Gabe Newell has long been saber-rattling in Windows 8's general direction, advocating instead for a Linux-based solution. Valve is wary of a Windows 8 that might threaten to supplant Steam as The Place To Go For Games. It's unlikely, but possible. Linux has proven to be a valuable escape route, but a flavor of Linux that is Steam just takes things a step further. There's no doubt that SteamOS is ultimately destined to be the elusive Steam Box's native language. Once that hits, Linux-compatibility (Valve must hope) becomes a whole new kind priority. It skews the question further from "does this support Linux?" and more towards "does this support Steam?" The former's a bonus, the latter less so.

SteamOS also stands to pull even non-gamers into the fold. SteamOS will heavily emphasize an AirPlay-like in-home streaming capability, an expanded focus on music, tv, and movies (read: non-gaming content, potentially including Spotify), and family sharing/parental controls. Or in other words, it will be a simple, free operating system that does just what you want your HTPC to do without all the confusing Linux bulk. No sudo apt-get here. And the more people Valve can get its hooks in, the more potential gamers will have Steam as their de-facto home for gaming if and when they decide to pick up a controller.

SteamOS will also focus on (naturally) graphics processing efficiencies, with access to the full 3000+ strong Steam catalog, and several top titles available—at some point—natively. Otherwise, all we know is that it'll be available "soon," and that the hardware's not far behind.

Linux based ? di ganoon karami mga titles na available compared sa windows... kelangan nila ng mga exclusives....

pero pag gumawa sila ng mga exclusives ... pano na yung steam sa pc ?

i think if your going for some EA games like Battlefield , Mass effects and other EA game devs it might wont work because EA has Origin

I think bro, ikaw ang confused. Ung Steam box e console. I know sa loob nun, it's still a PC, but the Steam Box has always been intended as a console and not as an alienware laptop/desktop.

Now, probably ang gusto mo itanong e ung Steam as a company. Steam as a company sells software app store style. Yes, nagsimula sila providing Windows games pero even before pa ni-release 'to they've already started providing games on other platforms -- Mac, PS3, etc., at nagsimula na rin sila magbenta ng software.  And the reason is simple. Like any company,  they need to keep keep growing. At kung mag-stick lang sila sa Windows games, they will reach a point when hindi na sila kikita ng ganun kalaki, and possibly, baka malugi na sila. Specially now, if you are following tech news, PC sales and laptop sales are down. Of course people will continue to buy PCs, but that market is shrinking and it's shrinking fast.

PC GAMERS will not invest on another Platform/System just to play STEAM GAMES when they already have perfectly fin x86 Windows Desktops and Laptops that do other things, so if one cant watch PORN and do other things that they can already do on a PC, why get a STEAMBOX with STEAM OS???

and in the dawn of the PS4 and the XBOX One, this is a really bad move for steam, they should have just stayed No.1 in the PC GAMING REALM because SONY and MS will eat them alive

This is a hedge for the future.

You're right, PC gamers won't invest in another platform. But check the earnings reports. PC and laptop sales are way down and you can bet that a bulk of those holding on to PCs/laptops are from businesses. More and more people are forgoing the PCs/laptops for other devices and much of these people have already purchased games on Steam. I think that's a good incentive for purchasing a Steam Box over PS4/Xbox.

Steam will not lose it's #1 position in PC gaming, at least not any time soon. Them releasing Steam OS to other manufacturers is actually a smart move on their part. They can choose to release Piston consoles on selected markets and if successful, other manufacturers can pick it up from there and Steam can focus their attention back to selling games.

In a way, Steam had no choice but to do this and it is good they're doing it early.

right , PC gamers will not dig this Steam Box even if you can "upgrade" the parts inside, it is simply a console where you can plug it in and play like an ordinary console

Steam OS , i dont think these will work either on your PC because even if they release it for PC gamers, PC gaming rig is not used for gaming only they forgot that we use our computer for some office work and other stuff that we do

Steam OS has a long way to develop their system  smoking::
