i7 = 4 cores, 8 threads
i5 = 4 cores, 4 threads

go for i7 laptop in terms of speed but go for i5 laptop in terms of budget (pag price differences nila 2 ay 10k, pero pag 5k lang differences, i7 laptop kunin mo). but I rather go for i5 laptop, kasi mas preferred ko i7 sa desktop at hindi sa laptop

It would be just a simple math, more threads means more performance. But as for the speed, if your not that kind of a heavy user i5 4th gen would be a best buy for you

before buying a computer/laptop, always ask this first of all: What do I need it for? Am I gonna be playing hardcore games on it? Any heavy video editing? photo editing? simple office work? facebooking? simple browsing?

once you answer that question, then that's what helps you decide. Why would you buy a $1000 machine to do something a $200 one can do.
