PH may grow faster than China
« on: August 03, 2013, 02:46:15 am »

The Philippines can grow faster than China in the coming years, a top official of British bank Standard Chartered said Thursday.

Standard Chartered global macro research head Marios Maratheftis said the economy might expand 8 percent or faster annually beyond 2015, if current policies of the present administration, healthy fundamentals and strong business confidence were sustained.

“There is no reason for the Philippines not to grow faster than China,” Maratheftis said.

“Policy, fundamentals and confidence would be the three key drivers of growth. Policies are moving in the right direction, especially on public-private partnership projects, fundamentals are also very healthy and confidence is high. These three are well aligned for the Philippines,” Maratheftis said.

A Standard Chartered’s recent business confidence survey showed the Philippines obtained the highest score in 2013, with the United Arab Emirates getting the second highest result.

“Generally, there is more confidence from the corporate sector. If this level of confidence can be translated into actions, the Philippines can attract more foreign direct investments,” Maratheftis said.

Maratheftis said within the Asean region, their top picks were the Philippines and Indonesia. He said the Philippines was a positive story, which was just starting and had a very long way to go.

He said because of the country’s boundless potentials, Standard Chartered adjusted upward its 2013 growth projection for the Philippines to 7 percent from the previous 6.9 percent.

He said the country’s more exposure to the US economy than China would be a plus factor. He said while China’s economy was on a high growth recently, it was “slowing down.”

the hindrance of economic growth is
1. political policy
2. law especially taxes and holidays
3. Security

I'm just being optimistic po and I'm still positive na darating yung araw na aasenso din yung pilipinas.

Puro utak talangka at alimasag ang mga nag-popost dito... smoking:: what's wrong with the scenario being painted by the post of the TS? Ayaw niyo ba umasenso ang Pinas?

Well, may nandiyaang "neo-liberal" na   ang bukambibig eh..cha-cha and the removal of the so called "protectionist provisions.

I wont be getting  far  from the Philippines and will not quote from my prof from #@*& university.  Here's Miriam Santiago in an Inquirer interview in 2011 regarding her views on the necessity for a change in the charter's economic provisions to develop the country's economy:

Quote
“I am sorry to dash cold water on all those fervent hopes about inviting investments, but the truth of the matter is it does not take a constitutional amendment to invite foreign investors… It is certainty and stability,” Santiago asserted.

“Any businessman will tell you that what would invite investments… is not whether we allow them to own the enterprise or limit them only to 40 percent ownership,” she added.

Here's Alan Peter Cayetano's take on the same issue as was quoted also in the same report:

Quote
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano urged his colleagues to stop giving people “false hopes” by packaging Charter change as the ultimate solution to major problems.

“The problems of our country are peace and order, graft and corruption, the burgeoning prices of oil and electricity and the lack of infrastructure. Ask the potential investors in our country and they’ll mention the same problems hampering our economic growth,” Cayetano noted.

Forcing amendments at this point could “only create bigger problems,” he also warned.

“Bringing the people’s attention to Charter change and making them believe that it will solve all of the country’s problems, especially concerning the economy, is really just giving them false hopes,” he said.

Finally, I'll throw the gauntlet to anyone and challenge him to refute this quote from a 2013 interview of Senator Santiago as to the motivating factor behind the move to change the economic provisions of the charter.

Quote
Asked about motives behind charger change, Santiago said, “It’s self-evident. Certain corporations are interested in the natural resources of our country and want to invest here but they want to own the whole thing … They are pressuring these politicians.”

last year umabot na tayo ng more than 7% so di malayo na maabot natin yang 8% na sinasabi ng taga standard chartered.
