Somalia: Caught Between A Natural And A Man-Made Disaster
« on: July 22, 2011, 02:39:03 pm »
In what may very well be a repeat of past calamities, Somalia is once again suffering one of the worst droughts in Africa's history, leading to a famine of biblical proportions.

The alarm has been sounded by various international organizations--among them the International Rescue Committee and the United Nations--who are calling upon the world to send aid as refugee camps along the borders of Ethiopia and Kenya grow larger each day.

The drought alone, however, is not the only reason why starvation is widespread in Somalia. There is also the top-to-bottom corruption in the Somali government and a twenty-year civil war that does not appear likely to end anytime soon.

And to make matters worse, Al-Shahab--the militant group that controls a large part of Somalia and has been likened to the Taliban--is denying that there is famine in their country and is restricting (if not outright banning) aid groups from helping Somalis.

I stand corrected: the group's name is Al-Shabaab or (officially) Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen.

Their goal is to overthrow the incumbent government of Somalia and establish the ummah, a unified Islamic state under shari’a law. Unfortunately, their methods are similar to Al Qaeda (with whom they have been linked) and the Taliban. They consider anyone opposed to them as enemies of Islam--and therefore subject to death.

Those enemies, of course, include just about every organization from the West and so al-Shabaab has placed severe restrictions (bordering on an outright ban on some cases) on the entry of aid groups into Somalia.

As if things weren't bad enough, this happened.

Before long, the United Nations might have to send in its own troops just to secure the relief goods being brought into the camps.
