Manchester United – Alphonse Areola to be offered contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain

L’Equipe is reporting that Tottenham and Manchester United target Alphonse Areola has been offered a contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain.

Areola starred for PSG in their pre-season friendlies, and while his contract currently expires in 2012, the 18-year-old will be offered an extension until 2015. Areola’s response to the new contract is set for the coming days.

Manchester United and Tottenham have both been monitoring the progress of Areola, and believe that the keeper, who is only 18-years-old, could be the next Hugo Lloris, who was also a target for United as they search for a replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Saar.

Tottenham have already signed Brad Freidel in the transfer period, but Spurs are on the lookout for up and coming talent, and may see Areola as more of a long term target while the youngster finds his wings in France.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said today that although the club had paid big money to purchase David De Gea, his place in the starting line up is far from assured next season.

"Obviously we have signed David De Gea as the main choice I would imagine," Ferguson said.

"But Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos have probably said to themselves they have an opportunity with Van der Sar retiring.

"It is an open door for me. De Gea will play on Saturday against Chicago but they will all get their fair share of games and the decision on who starts the season will depend on how De Gea settles."
