A grandmaster of the Wing Chun style kung fu in Foshan. His devotion to martial art means often neglects his wife and son, resulting in tension and discontent in the family.
Ip shoots to fame when he defeats kung fu masters from the north in a nation-wide wushu championship. Hundreds wanted to learn kung fu from him.
When the Japanese occupies Foshan during the Sino-Japan war, Ip is forced to work as a coolie in a factory. He is also invited to fight in sparring matches for the enemy's amusement. It is during one such match that he shows his masterly skills defeating his opponents despite being badly outnumbered. He wins the admiration of a Japanese general, Mr Miura.
Ip later finds work in a cotton mill factory. When the factory was robbed by armed bandit Kam Shan-Chau, Ip was recruited to teach the workers the defensive Wing Chun skills. The spiteful Kam tips off the enemies about Ip's whereabouts.
General Miura challenges Ip to a championship fight. The event quickly turns into an awakening for the Chinese: It was time they used Chinese kung fu to drive the enemy from their land.
