the game devs said it before they release this trailer that they will not keep Shepard , they listen to their fans and they will create a new world , a new character for the new game

nope you will not understand the Story , you need to start at the first one because the stories are connected to each Mass Effect parts why Shepard meet this Character and what's their relationship and so on and so fort
