Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) and Foster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot (1833-1901) co-founded the secret Kama Shastra Society of London, England and Benares, India in 1876. They also worked together translating two of the greatest love manuals of all time which they privately published (for private circulation only) through the Kama Shastra Society: the Kama Sutra (1883) and the Ananga Ranga (1885) both translated from the original Sanskrit. These were the first ancient Hindu treatises on the art of love to be translated into the English language, but they were so controversial that they could not be officially published in England until the mid 1960s.
