Spider-Man (Finally) Opens On Broadway
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:45:53 pm »
Two members of U2 (Bono and The Edge), two writers (Glen Berger followed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa), two directors (Julie Taymor of Lion King fame followed by Philip William McKinley), five injuries, a record-setting one hundred and eighty three preview performances, and $75,000,000 later...the comic-book rock musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark finally opened on June 14 at the Foxwoods Theater on Broadway in New York.

The good news was that, all the trouble surrounding the production aside, it did make some improvements.

Theater critics, of course, had a field day with Spidey's Broadway debut. They were generally impressed with the visual effects but felt that the storyline and the music left a lot to be desired.

One critic even predicted its eventual demise.

Despite all the bad press, though, Bono still has faith in the entire project and predicts that it will be able to stand on its own legs: "I think even though it looks like there's a lot of ill will against us, I think it'll turn around. If it's just spectacle, we will have failed. But if you can be moved, and if you believe these characters, and if Spider-Man outlives his fabulism and you really buy into the myth, it's a great American story."

The production team from Bono down to the maintenance personnel have been keeping their fingers crossed that nobody follows in Owen Hart's shoes while the show is running.
