On Tuesday, Sleeping In Airports travel website released the results of the world’s Best and Worst airports of the year. Results were based on votes and surveys from the travel website’s online visitors from September 2012 to August 2013 based on comfort, convenience, cleanliness and customer service.
Sleeping In Airports’ list of World’s Worst Airports of 2013:
1 Manila NAIA (Terminal 1)
2 Bergamo
3 Calcutta
4 Islamabad
5 Paris Beauvais
6 Chennai
7 Frankfurt Hahn
8 Mumbai
9 Rome Fiumicino
10 Los Angeles
Yet again, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 was voted the World’s Worst Airport, but unlike previous years, the list was submitted without stating reasons. Last year, NAIA Terminal 1 was dubbed Worst Airport in Asia, and they noted that:
“Travelers continue to complain about the long and numerous queues that begin outside the terminal. Once inside, there will be no time for naps and certainly no place for quiet rest and enjoyment as you’ll be busy going through various queues for the next few hours as you proceed to your gate.â€
However, recent comments about the airport pointed out cases of discrimination, theft and dishonest airport staff.
A person with the username “c.young 1010″ wrote:
“After processing and confirming our boarding passes for the connecting flights , we were immediately directed to the adjacent detention area with collapsing ceiling , smelly sofas and poor ventilation. I termed it detention area as everyone’s passports and boarding passes were confiscated while movements were restricted and monitored with NAIA airport staff guarding the only entrance,â€
“We were convinced that the NAIA airport staff selectively detained Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese as Westerners from USA/Canada/Europe/Australia though with Chinese and Taiwanese spouses were immediately release and ask to leave the premises.â€
Despite the bad ranking however, Sleeping In Airports did recognize NAIA Terminal 3 fro receiving better feedback and reviews compared to NAIA 1.
Top 10 Best Airports of 2013 are:
1 Singapore Changi
2 Seoul Incheon
3 Amsterdam
4 Hong Kong
5 Helsinki Vantaa
6 Munich
7 Zurich
8 Kuala Lumpur International Airport
9 Vancouver
10 Frankfurt am Main
Last July however, NAIA 1 was given a budget for renovation of PHP1 billion (approximately USD23.2 million) to be used for structural work, aesthetics, interior design and for the construction of rapid exit taxiways to lessen runway congestion and cut delays during aircraft landings and takeoffs. It is scheduled to be completed before 2016.
