can anyone explain to me whats the difference in using a DSL router(wired) and a 8/16/24 port HUB/Switch coz were planning on expanding our internet/network connection into 10 houses here in our compound, obviously the HUB has mor ports to plug in more PCs, but why do pc stores still recommend using a router

routers have added security protocols compared to a hub switch. hub switches merely allocates the connection. a router also does the same thing but it also provides added security.

also pag may router ka, pwede na dun dadaan ang internet connection. no more need of a gateway pc since yung router na ang magiging gateway

yes. as long as yung router ang gateway mo. kung ang setup mo is hindi yung router ang gateway then you still need the main computer to be on at all times

pag sa bahay lang yan, a router would be good. though pag internet cafe, it would be better if you use switch hubs. mapapamahal ka lang pag magrouter ka since you need the gateway to be one of the pc's so you can monitor the other pc's. so more or less useless ang router, gagamitin mo lang sya as switch hub

is the connection stability and stregnth affected by either method, i mean is one better thn the other, as i understand it DSL router will make the connection equal between all 4(since it has 4 ports) unlike hubs that work like ur cable tv dsl, the stability, strangth and clarity reduces as more connect

kahit naman po hub lang di na kailangan ang gateway pc. pwede mo iconfigure yung mga pc na connect directly to the internet.

Additional info lang po.  Wala ka talagang choice bossing.  If gamit nyo isang DSL connection lang for the whole compound, you will use both DSL router AND switch.  Ang router kasi pang-connect ng dalawang "segments" which in this case is ang internet side tsaka yung compound network nyo na side.  Yung switch naman, is connection lang between local segments, which in this case is yung connections nyo sa PC.  Yung switch ginagamit to form a local area network.

Siguro yung tinutukoy nyo is yung packaged router/switch (otherwise known as a multi-port router).  Dalawang function tong device na to.  Router at the same time switch.  Mas mahal lang talaga to. So, don't bother.

Dapat kasi, yung DSL router is also some sort of a DHCP server.

Very easy yung configuration.  Lay-out ng network mo:

Internet --> DSL router ---> Smoothwall Linux -----> switch ---->computers

also, its not true that DSL routers with 4 port switches are more expensive than a plain DSL router and a switch. mura na ang mga DSL router ngayon. and most DSL routers these days already have a standard 4 port switch. yan na ang norm ngayon. example, a netgear 54 wireless g router with 4 port switch as well as firewall security will only cost around 3000 (kung plain router w/ 4 port switch lang ang murang klase like edimax is only around 2000)

i think the thread starter has already made it clear that his DSL router comes with 4 ports. also, with regards to using multiple pc's, there is no problem there, you can set it up with the use of a DSL router (though it may mean that you have to provide the DSL router yourself) unless there is an explicit notification from your ISP that you cannot use more than 1 pc

if we are talking about the standard routers that ISP's give, mostly these are not the standard routers being sold commercially these days. these are just the old type DSL router that doesnt provide a login, no added security, no firewall, no port forwarding, etc.

why? since lugi sila pag yun ang iprovide nila. their concept kasi is like this, their so called speed daw is designed for one user lang. if you want to use two or more computers, dapat daw dun ka sa higher na plan (i.e. bigger earnings for them) kasi daw pag dalawa ang gamitin mong pc, hati daw yung speed mo (which is partially true but not neccesarily all the time if you are using a switch)
