BULUAN, Maguindanao – Folksinger Freddie Aguilar will wed his 16-year old girlfriend under Islamic rites here 3 p.m. Friday.
Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu, who stands as principal sponsor, said he had personally suggested to Aguilar that the wedding be held here.
Aguilar, whose star has waned, was thrown into the limelight anew when he broke the news about his minor-girlfriend.
He was widely criticized as a child exploiter and was even sued before a court for taking a minor as a girlfriend.
Mangudadatu said the wedding ceremony and reception will be at the BBGM Restaurant here.
Under Philippine laws, a 16-year-old girl is still a minor and isn’t allowed to marry.
But an earlier tabloid report said Aguilar had agreed to convert into Islam, which allows such union.
On November 2, Aguilar said in an INQUIRER report that he will do “whatever it takes even if it would mean converting into Islam†just to marry his girlfriend.
In the same INQUIRER report, Aguilar said he is a “Born-Again Catholic.â€
